Madison High School: Another Fight, Officer Injured

This week began like the last week ended at Madison High School - with violence and police being called to the Milwaukee public school.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Another Milwaukee police officer was injured in an incident Monday at Madison Academic Campus, the second officer injured in a disturbance at the high school on two consecutive school days.

Officers were called to the school at N. 81st and W. Florist Ave. after dismissal shortly before 4 p.m. when school safety aides intervened in a fight between a female student and an adult female, Milwaukee Public Schools spokeswoman Roseann St. Aubin said.

According to St. Aubin, the adult came to the school and accused the student of stealing a cellphone. The girl fell to the pavement and the woman stomped on her. The woman fled when the safety aides intervened.

Officers who were in the building investigating the incident about an hour later intervened in an argument between two 17-year-old boys attending night classes. A third 17-year-old boy approached and pushed one of the officers to the floor and all three boys were arrested, St. Aubin said.

On Friday, eight arrests were made following multiple fights at the same school.

...On Thursday, a fight broke out at Washington High School, resulting in resisting arrest and disorderly conduct tickets for 12 people.

...Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Gregory Thornton called the behavior unacceptable.

"We ask parents and the community to step up and reinforce the standard of behavior that is expected in our school buildings," Thornton said in a statement. "We will not tolerate violence among students any more than parents would put up with it in their homes."

Just what are the standards of behavior expected in the homes of these violent students?

Are the parents enforcing rules of acceptable behavior at home? Are they guiding their children and holding them accountable?

If they aren't, it's hopeless.
