Caroline Panske Protests Pledge of Allegiance - Oshkosh Common Council Meeting

Mark Belling links to a Facebook post by Mark Showers, pointing out a protest in Oshkosh by Council Member Caroline Panske.

At the Oshkosh Common Council meeting on November 9, the day after the election, Panske stood for the invocation but turned her back to the American flag and sat down when the others in attendance said the Pledge of Allegiance.

Video of the entire meeting is posted on YouTube.

Panske's protest can be found at 0:45.

Apparently, students are selected to lead the council members and attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance to start the meeting.

Two fifth grade girls were introduced by Council Member Tom Pech Jr. They stood, came forward, were told to face the camera, and state their name, their school, their grade, and their favorite subject. Pech gave the girls certificates for their participation. After applause, Pech invited them to stay and watch local government at work or go home and do some homework. He also thanked their parents.

The girls had the honor of leading the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. They also saw Panske's protest.

What was the point of Panske's refusal to face the flag and participate in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance?

What is her problem with America?

Was she protesting the election results and Donald Trump? Was she showing her disgust for the country in general or just her fellow citizens of Oshkosh? Was she joining in the Colin Kaepernick anti-police protest? Did she have a specific reason for her protest or was it a way to express her overall dissatisfaction with America? What was the point?

At the very least, she owes the people of Oshkosh an explanation, especially the two fifth grade girls who were given the privilege of leading the Pledge of Allegiance at the meeting.

Panske should tell us why she didn't join in this display of respect for our country.
