Aaron Rodgers: Facemask

Here's a worthwhile read on the controversy surrounding the final play of the Packers - Cardinals game:

"These refs will never be accused of coddling the quarterback."

Watch the video.

What the hell?

I wonder what kind of game Kurt Warner would have had if he had his facemask yanked. Would he have been "flawless"? I don't think so.

Of course, I'm not happy with the outcome but the game was exciting.

Aaron Rodgers is as classy as he is talented.

I really admire what the Packers managed to accomplish this season after a rough first half.

Congratulations, Packers!

Yesterday's game doesn't break my heart after the way the Pack treated Fahvruh. Rodgers is a second tier QB and the Pack will have to endure that fact for the next several years.

Rodgers is not a second tier QB, not even close. Are you aware of his numbers?

What was heartbreaking was when Favre threw that interception at LAMBEAU in OT and destroyed our chances to return to the Super Bowl in 2008.

If immediately after that miserable pass he would have said he would be back next year, the retirement mess never would have happened, at least not in 2008.

By the way, congrats to the Jets! They're doing quite well this year.

agreed Mary..Rodgers is not a 2nd tier QB..he is an elite QB..this person obviously dosen't know football

Are you kidding with Aaron Rodgers being a 2nd tier QB?? He is the only QB in the history of the game to throw for over 4,000 yds in their first two seasons! He surpassed Favre's single season passing record this year. And maybe yesterday wasn't his best game but if he is in Green Bay for the amount of time Brett Favre was, will do more for the Green Bay Packers than Favre ever could have dreamed of!

To add to his 2nd tier resume, Rodgers also led GB to be the first NFL team to have a 4,000 yd passer, two 1,000 yd receivers, and a 1,200 yd rusher all in one season. Say what you want about how Favre was treated, but he got what he deserved and the Green Bay Packers are better off without him!

Ummm...you mean in their 4th and 5th?

As to Rodgers himself, yes, he is pretty good. Though only time will tell if he will be a Favre, Brady, Warner or a Jim Kelly, Dan Marino.

I think what sickens people is not that Green Bay has a good QB or that they have the potential to win. It is this hideous behavior from the faithful that have the nerve to write such things as this...

Fair weather just doesn't seem to describe it. More apt is classless.

Oh, as to the "facemask" issue, there were missed calls on both sides of the scrimmage line, the Cards should have really won it in regulation were it not for the choke, GB missed opportunities to have put it away earlier in the game, and the facemask came after the ball was loose, therefore Arizona ball on GB 31 as a worst case. Considering most of the sportswriters are treating it as a NON-issue, I suggest to move on with this along with many other hatchets you should be burying.

THAT is hilarious!

Clarifications:

Rodgers IS the first QB to have 4000+ yards in their first two seasons AS A STARTER. That's extremely impressive, all bias aside.

As far as the facemask issue, yeah, things don't get called every now and then, but we're talking about a blatant penalty that would've been called immediately if it happened to Favre, Brady, or either Manning. Not to mention, the missed helmet to helmet just the play before. Yeah, the Pack didn't even deserve to get into OT, who can disagree with that, but the fact is that Rodgers did pull it out and got them into the OT situation.

Obviously, several of the past posters are Favre supporters, and that's fine, but to hate on Rodgers is ridiculous. When Favre was a Packer and he was in large deficit situations like Rodgers was last night, he more often throws interceptions than touchdowns. Rodgers didn't throw a single interception after trailing by such a gap. Meanwhile, Favre has never won a game when trailing behind by 17 points. Rodgers started the game trailing by 17 and brought the team to 45 points in 3 quarters. Favre has a more storied career and many more stats than Rodgers does, but give Rodgers some time. He's not living in Favre's shadow anymore, and anyone who thinks that way obviously is too biased against the Packers in the first place.

WRONG! Shows how much you know - about as much as you know about the Favre situation with your "way favre was treated" comment.

Had the face mask been called, it occurred BEFORE the Cardinals had secured possession - just the same as a roughing the kicker on a punt - possession had not yet been established by the other team - so - it would have been personal foul, 15 yards, green bay first down.

But you're right - that play did not win or lose the game - when your quarterback throws for almost 400 yards in just over 3 quarters of play and puts 45 points on the board in the game's final 37 minutes of play all you should need to do is just play mediocre defense to win - just one defensive play of any type would win that game - and unfortunately for the Packers it was AZ that made it.

No question that Aaron Rodgers has matured into a top 5 NFL quarterback. I had Rodgers ranked ahead of Favre on my list prior to the wild-card game, but his play on Sunday certainly affirmed it.

I am way more upset about the cardinals touchdown where jolly was pushed into warner and called for roughing the passer and fitzgerald clearly pushed off and knocked over woodson to gain seperation

pre - 2008 rule accidental face masks have been eliminated. stop crying. the end of the game was called properly.

No buddy, you're wrong!!!

I really don't get why everyone has to take sides on the Favre-Rodgers argument. Favre had a great career as a Packer, and did more for the organization than perhaps anyone other than Lombardi himself. Where was the team before Favre showed up? Not in the postseason.

Rodgers is a great quarterback. Smart, composed. IF he stays healthy and IF he has a lengthy career as Favre has had, he will likely go down as one of the best ever. But that is a big 'if'.

People tend to forget just how rare and important longevity is. Favre had it. Rodgers got hurt in the first game he ever played in. Fortunately, even with the beating he took this past season, he is still healthy. We can only hope he will last.

Must say that he showed a lot of heart to get back in the game. But he couldn't get them over the top. Granted there were other issues (defense) involved. But at the end of the day, the only stat that REALLY matters is wins.e
