A meteor passing over Lake Michigan early Monday morning lit up the sky in several states and shook houses with its sonic boom.

...Meteorologist Jeff Last of the National Weather Service's office in Green Bay said the meteor was accompanied by a sonic boom that shook houses in the region.

Last said radar shows the meteor passing over Lake Michigan, but he said it wasn't clear if it landed in the water or if it broke up in the sky.

UPDATE, from CBS 58:

An apparent meteor streaked across the Midwestern sky early Monday morning. The American Meteor Society has received more than 170 reports of a fireball crossing the Wisconsin sky around1:25 AM. The green fireball was seen in Wisconsin and Illinois, but the AMS has received other reports of seeing the fireball from Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, New York, Kentucky, Minnesota and Ontario, Canada.

The AMS estimates the trajectory of the meteor as traveling from the southwest to the northeast, ending its flight over Lake Michigan somewhere between Manitowoc and Sheboygan.

When it's around 1:30 in the morning and you see a massive flash that's seemingly inexplicable, and then you hear a very loud boom, also inexplicable, it's scary.

I'm glad it turned out to be a phenomenon of nature.

In fact, just about every pop culture reference to the Ides—save for those appearing in actual history-based books, movies or television specials—makes it seem like the day itself is cursed.

But the Ides of March actually has a non-threatening origin story. Kalends, Nones and Ides were ancient markers used to reference dates in relation to lunar phases. Ides simply referred to the first full moon of a given month, which usually fell between the 13th and 15th. In fact, the Ides of March once signified the new year, which meant celebrations and rejoicing.

So, don't beware? Instead, celebrate and rejoice?

...Did the death of Caesar curse the day, or was it just Shakespeare’s mastery of language that forever darkened an otherwise normal box on the calendar? If you look through history, you can certainly find enough horrible things that happened on March 15, but is it a case of life imitating art? Or art imitating life?

Perhaps it was Julius Caesar himself (and not the famous dramatist) who caused all the drama. After all, he’s the one who uprooted Rome’s New Year celebration from their traditional March 15 date to January…just two years before he was betrayed and butchered by members of the Roman senate.

Bad and good things can and do happen every day.
