Russert kept hammering away: Are you running for president?
She said she didn't want to run, had no intention of running. She said she will never be president.
He wouldn't let up. Finally, she said, "I won't run."
Russert wouldn't end the interview until he got her to say she won't be a candidate.
Of course, how many times did Hillary say the same thing?

That's Russert's way. Remember when he badgered John Kerry about paying for his nationalized health care plan several months back?
I don't believe for second that Condi doesn't have at least some aspiration of running for President. However, it was indeed smart to leave that prospect out of the picture for one crucial reason. It suggests that her only focus right now is the office of Secretary of State, while dispelling any possibility of political manuevering to mobilize a future campaign.
Of course, that is all perception. In fact, that is what politics is all about. Perception.
