I'm somewhat surprised by the reactions I'm hearing today. Most of the reasons being cited for the murders have something in common.
While varied--it's our gun laws, it's our mental illness policies, it's the church's cult-like message--the responses focus on explanations that shift the responsibility away from Terry Ratzmann himself.
The shootings were not caused by the sermon. They were not the result of his difficulties at work. They didn't happen because Wisconsin does not allow concealed carry gun permits.
There seems to be a desire to avoid acknowledging that Ratzmann chose to commit these heinous acts, that an individual chose evil and death.
Analyzing the information on Ratzmann's computers, looking at his Web site, talking to his neighbors and acquaintances--it's all an exercise in futility.
Such mind-reading reveals more about the ones doing the speculating than about Ratzmann.
We may experience some comfort by kidding ourselves into believing we can "know" Ratzmann's motives. I doubt the guessing games will provide the understanding we seek. We aren't truly finding answers. We are simply hoping to construct something reasonable in order to comprehend an act that is beyond comprehension.
Why look for a rational explanation to an irrational act?
There is no sense to be found in senselessness.
