Maureen Dowd's column, "Smoke Gets in Our News," is a jumbled mess.
Is it about the future of broadcast news and Nightline?
Is it about where young people get their news?
Is it another hit piece on the Catholic Church?
Is it a slimy reiteration of the distortions about Pope Benedict XVI being a Nazi?
Is it an attack on Bush's "scary" faith in God?
Is it about the role of evangelicals in the GOP?
Is it a tirade on Tom DeLay?
Is it a smear on Bill Frist?
Is it a completely pointless, wandering, dim-witted piece?
The answer is--ALL OF THE ABOVE.
Amazingly, even though she tackles more than half a dozen different topics, Dowd's column offers NO insight whatsoever, other than giving a glimpse into her own deeply troubled psyche.
After touching on all these bases in one relatively short piece, Dowd concludes, "As they toy with less lofty multiple-anchor formats, the networks may be more open to women. But at the Vatican and in the Christian right's vanguard, we can be sure that the voice of God is not female."
Was she trying to do a Robin Williams disjointed, stream of consciousness thing or is she just a poor columnist?
