I know this is old news, but I was out last night and I wasn't able to watch Ann Coulter's appearance on The Tonight Show until a few minutes ago.
A few thoughts--
When Coulter was introduced, Leno just shook her hand. Usually, he gives the Hollywood hug and kiss to all his guests, male and female. I thought that was a little weird.
It set the tone for the interview. Although Leno wasn't rude to her at all, it was clear that he disagreed with her style.
There's nothing wrong with that. The interview was very civil and even pleasant. What I have a problem with is Leno's much warmer treatment of extreme Leftists.
I fully expected him to question Coulter on the controversy over the 9/11 widow remark. Leno would have been remiss if he failed to address it.
However, he took a definite stance that he believed she was too harsh. He contrasted his style with hers, saying, "It's so different than the way I work. Maybe it's because I'm a comic." Leno asserted that her point gets lost in her inflammatory words.
I've seen Michael Moore with Leno several times. I don't think he ever accused him of being too harsh.
Leno asked Coulter, "Is the point of the book to move forth your conservative ideas, what you think, or is it to sell books?"
Again, have you heard Leno ask Al Franken such a question when he's on the show to hawk a book. I don't remember Leno asking Franken if the point of one his books is to sell liberal ideas or to make money.
This exchange was really weird:
Leno: "Have you ever had sex with a liberal?"
Coulter: "No."
Leno: "Really?"
What is that???
Leno asked Coulter if she has ever regretted what she's said? I'd like to ask Leno if he regrets asking that question. Inappropriate!
Then Leno brought up how nasty everything is in politics and the lack of civility. Lack of civility? Like when he asked Coulter if she ever had sex with a liberal?
Leno said Coulter's new book would qualify as "nasty."
She disagreed. She said that the "alleged disruption of civility" is really just conservatives being able to talk back now through talk radio, the Internet and FOX News. The libs no longer control all media.
Once again, I question why Leno would call Coulter nasty but not someone like Bill Maher.
When Bill Maher was Leno's guest last July 26, he allowed Maher to get REALLY nasty.
I mean REALLY, REALLY nasty.
It was disgusting. Leno didn't call Maher on any of the horrible things he said, including a rant about Bush appointee Dr. W. David Hager anally raping his wife.
Read more about Jay Leno, Bill Maher, and anal rape.
I like Leno. I think he's a good guy and he wasn't mean to Coulter. It's only because I'm a somewhat regular viewer of the show that I did pick up on his hypocrisy.
Another thing worth noting--
I thought at least some members of the audience would react with hostility to Coulter. I didn't hear any boos at all, only applause and cheering. That was really a surprise.
What isn't surprising is that Coulter's new book, Godless, is number one this week on the New York Times bestseller list.

You mean take the life from issue to issue?
I don't know what you mean.
Ann's a big girl, and she knows what she's up against.
She also knows the buzz she's created is selling her books like crazy.
Of all the Hollywood/media idiots, Leno probably treated her the fairest.....Which isn't saying much, but also isn't what she's worried about.
