North Korea: Peanut Diplomacy

Last night, I got some advice from Scott Ott of Scrappleface. He was a guest on KRLA's Lores Rizkalla Live.

He suggested that rather than feeling overwhelmed or despairing over the news and the state of the world, one should consider looking at it all from a different angle.

I'll follow his suggestion. This is an ode to Scott.

Bush Mulls Peanut Diplomacy and North Korea

by Mary

(2006-07-10) - President George W. Bush, under criticism from conservatives and liberals for his handling of the North Korea missile crisis, agreed to meet with former President Jimmy Carter late last week.

Carter offered his diplomatic expertise to help Bush find a solution to Kim Jong Il's defiance and China's complicity.

A low level government official whose daughter attends the same preschool as the nephew of a high level administration official, leaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that during the Oval Office meeting, Carter strongly urged President Bush to declare that the U.S. team will boycott the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

The strategy parallels Carter's response to the Soviet Union's 1979 invasion of Afghanistan.

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Carter's suggestion to create a vast coalition of the willing to boycott the Beijing Olympics aims to pressure China into strapping a choke collar on Kim Jong Il. He believes an Olympic boycott will be the most effective way to put an end to North Korea's missile tests and halt nuclear proliferation.

Another source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "The President appreciated President Carter's thoughts on the matter. It was a successful meeting in that the President managed not to laugh until former President Carter had left the Oval Office and was no longer within earshot."

Scott is right.

I feel better.
