TERRIFYING

This is absolutely terrifying.

It's like that feeling you get when you narrowly avoid getting into a car accident.

WASHINGTON, (AP) -- The terrorist attack foiled by British authorities on Thursday was aimed at blowing up as many as 10 airplanes on trans-Atlantic flights, and plotters had hoped to stage a dry run within two days, U.S. intelligence officials said.

The actual attack would have followed within days.

Ten planes blown apart could have meant 3000 dead.

Within days, thousands of lives could have been lost.

One official said the suicide attackers planned to use a peroxide-based solution that could ignite when sparked by a camera flash or another electronic device.

The test run was designed to see whether the plotters would be able to smuggle the needed materials aboard the planes, these officials said. They spoke only on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject matter.

The details of the alleged plot surfaced as the administration posted a maximum code-red alert for passenger flights from England to the United States and banned liquids from all carry-on bags.

..."This was a well-advanced plan," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told reporters as British authorities announced the arrests of 24 alleged plotters. "In some respects suggestive of an al-Qaida plot."

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said as many as 10 flights had been targeted.

Other officials said they were United, American and Continental Airlines routes from Britain to the major U.S. summer tourist destinations of New York, California and Washington, D.C. These officials declined to provide details on when the plotters intended to strike.

Virginia's deputy homeland security director, Steven Mondul, said that in a morning conference call, federal officials pointed to New York's John F. Kennedy Airport, Los Angeles International and Dulles Airport outside Washington as "major destinations for flights originating from the United Kingdom." No specific warnings were issued for these facilities, he added.

The red alert for flights from Britain was the first since the color-coded warning system was developed in the wake of the 2001 terror attacks. The decision to ban nearly all liquids from passenger cabins was reminiscent of the stringent rules imposed when planes were allowed back in the skies for the first time afterward the Sept. 11 attacks.

I've heard people say that it's an overreaction to ban all carry-on liquids.

Really?

If God forbid an Islamofascist managed to blow up a plane, those would be the first people to scream about not enough being done to prevent it.

In other words, if you have a problem with the restrictions, then don't fly.

Period.

...In brief remarks from Green Bay, Wis., the president said the events showed the nation "is at war with Islamic fascists."

The lib media are making a big deal out of the fact that Bush called our enemies "Islamic fascists."

What's the big deal?

THAT'S WHAT THEY ARE.

Deal with it.

...House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said events reinforced the need to implement the recommendations of an independent 9/11 commission, a reminder of one of her party's main campaign promises.

No.

Events reinforced the need to assure that Dems do not control the House or Senate or both.

Events reinforced the need to assure that Nancy Pelosi does not become Speaker of the House.

A Dem bragged about killing the Patriot Act (Harry Reid).

A Dem introduced a resolution to censure President Bush for counterterrorism efforts (Russ Feingold).

A Dem propaganda publication (The New York Times) repeatedly leaks information on classified programs to fight terrorism.

It's frightening to think of what may have transpired in the next few days and weeks if the Dems were in charge.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Prominent Democrats said on Thursday a foiled plot in Britain to blow up U.S.-bound planes showed the Bush administration's pursuit of war in Iraq had diverted resources from the bigger threat of terrorism and made the danger worse.

With national security likely to play a crucial role in November's elections, some Democrats attacked President George W. Bush's justifications for the Iraq war and said the plot showed the terrorism threat was growing under his watch.

"Five years after 9-11, it is clear that our misguided policies are making America more hated in the world and making the war on terrorism harder to win," Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts said.

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada said Bush and Congress needed to change course in Iraq and ensure Americans are protected around the world.

"The Iraq war has diverted our focus and more than $300 billion in resources from the war on terrorism and has created a rallying cry for international terrorists," Reid said.

...Bush's foe in the 2004 election, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, said America was "not as safe as we can and must be" and in part blamed the president's focus on Iraq.

"This event exposes the misleading myth that we are fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here. In fact, the war in Iraq has become a dangerous distraction and a profound drain on our financial and military resources," Kerry said.

...Lamont issued a statement on Thursday saying national security and the ability to fight terrorism had been weakened under Bush and "both anger at America around the world and the number of terrorists seeking to do us harm have increased."

In the face of such a massive, potentially devastaing plot, how can they be so callous and self-serving?

It's absolutely nauseating. They truly make me ill.

Reid, Kennedy, Kerry, and Lamont should be ashamed of themselves; and every person who voted for them should be disgusted. Their exploitation of today's events is positively sickening.

President Bush's policies haven't created more terrorists.

NO. IT'S THE WEAK, SPINELESS, CUT AND RUN APPEASERS -- THEY CREATE TERRORISTS.

Ask Osama bin Laden. He said so.
