Jasmine Owens: Milwaukee 4-Year-Old Killed

Are Milwaukee residents so desensitized to violence that it doesn't faze them anymore?

Has gun violence become so commonplace there that it no longer shocks?

Does this murder of a 4-year-old girl while playing outside a home bother anyone enough to say, "Enough"?

From
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

A 4-year-old girl and a man were killed in two separate shootings that kicked off a rash of gun violence that spread across Milwaukee's north and west sides Monday night.

The girl was shot in the head as she sat outside a home in the 2800 block of N. 29th St. in a drive-by shooting about 8:20 p.m., police said.

She was pronounced dead later at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Wauwatosa.

A 26-year-old man was shot in the leg at the scene and is expected to survive, police said.

Police tape cordoned off the scene and surrounding blocks as neighbors walked by and lamented news of the girl's death.

The shooting was followed by at least three others before midnight.

A 25-year-old man was shot in the chest in the 2500 block of N. 40th St. about 11 p.m. and died at the scene, police said.

No other information was available in the killing.

The man and the girl killed Monday are the 38th and 39th homicide victims of the year, compared with 32 at this time last year.

In an earlier shooting, a 14-year-old boy was shot in the leg about 9:40 p.m. in the 2700 block of W. Burleigh St., a few blocks from where the girl was killed.

The boy was arguing with another youth when one of them pulled a gun and shots were fired, police said.

Milwaukee is really a mess.

A 4-year-old is dead because she was sitting in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Only four years old!

That's nauseating.

It's nauseating that such a bloody and deadly night is followed by silence from Milwaukee's leaders.

I guess it's business as usual in the city.

Update: Mayor Tom Barrett has responded.

In a planned news conference announcing Police Chief Nan Hegerty's plan to tackle violence in Milwaukee this summer, Barrett commented on the rash of shootings.

He talked tough about the death of Jasmine Owens, calling her killer a thug.

Do you think that Barrett is beginning to realize that the city is in crisis?

That would be LONG overdue.

You're wrong if you think it affects no one, that no one cares, or that it's "business as usual." You've seen that. Yeah, we need a hell of a lot of work (literally!) and help, but it sure doesn't come from people who say we the people of Milwaukee don't care.

I know there are people who care.

I know there are people who are sickened by the senseless death of a precious little girl.

So when will enough of these good people say that they are not going to take this anymore?

NO MORE!
