Al Gore III and the Inconvenient Truth

Al Gore III encounters a controlling legal authority.

Al Gore, the Big Green Kahuna, is just days away from his Live Earth extravaganza.

Unfortunately, there's been a diversion in Gore's grandest opportunity yet to bask in the warmth of the globe.

It's not an attack by Republicans, no vast right-wing conspiracy.

His own son, Al Gore III, has derailed his biggest moment.

Al Gore III, son of the former vice president, was arrested in California early Wednesday morning for suspicion of possessing marijuana and prescription drugs.

Gore III was allegedly driving a blue Toyota Prius at speeds over 100 mph when he was pulled over around 2:15 a.m. on the San Diego freeway south of Los Angeles. Smelling marijuana, police searched the car and found less than one ounce of marijuana and prescription drugs Xanax, Valium, Vicodin and Adderall, Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Armormino said. The last pharmaceutical is a treatment for attention deficit disorder.

"He does not have a prescription for any of those drugs," Amormino said.

Gore, 24, was released from a men's jail in Santa Ana after posting $20,000 bail.

To me, one of the most shocking things about this incident is that Gore III managed to get a Prius up to speeds over 100 mph.

I didn't think that was possible.

Not only was he suspected of driving under the influence, Gore III had A LOT of different drugs in the car with him and no prescriptions for any of them. The contraband highlights the extent of Gore III's problems.

This wasn't just an isolated mistake, a lapse in judgment.

Far from it. This was just another in a string of arrests for Gore III.

This is the second time he was arrested on a marijuana possession charge. Police in Montgomery County, Md., pulled over Gore in December 2003 and noticed the smell of pot. Police were also tipped off by the open windows and sunroof despite the freezing temperature.

Gore, who at the time was a Harvard university student, and his two male passengers were charged with a misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana and released. The youngest of Al and Tipper Gore's four children then completed substance abuses classes as a pretrial diversion program, before settling the charges.

I guess those classes didn't help.
Gore was also ticketed for reckless driving by North Carolina police in August 2000, and military police arrested him for drunk driving near a military base in Virginia in September 2002. Gore III now lives in Los Angeles and is an associate publisher of GOOD, a magazine about philanthropy aimed at young people.

Gore III obviously has some serious issues.

They predate his father's recent ascendance to movie star status. It's not like Gore III went along for the Hollywood ride and veered down the wrong path.

Perhaps he needs some jail time. Maybe he'd undergo a jailhouse conversion like Paris Hilton did. Whatever, I hope he gets his act together before he hurts himself or someone else.

Gore III was given a second chance at life when he survived the accident that nearly killed him as a little boy. Now, he's abusing himself and putting others at risk in the process.

It's entirely possible that Gore III's reckless driving while under the influence could result in a child being seriously injured or killed.

He's a 24-year-old adult, but I guess he doesn't have the maturity to make that connection.

The timing of this latest arrest couldn't be worse for Daddy Al, just before Live Earth kicks off and the hysterical, "sky is falling" environmentalists prepare to bow down before their patron saint Al.

Then again, Gore III was driving a Prius.

If it had been a gas-guzzling SUV, this would really be a disaster.

My bet is it was a set up to make Daddy look bad, all seems a little fishy to me. Prius up to 100 miles an hour and all those rx drugs. Who knows? But, I would'nt put it past the republican party to take out the only one who could really beat anyone this next election. It's such a shame that these kids can't be a little kinder to themselves and their parents.

I agree with you that the children of politicians should show more respect for their parents and themselves.

I completely disagree with you that Gore III's arrest was a set-up, a Right-wing plot.

I also disagree with you on Gore's potential as a presidential candidate.

The Left will never give up on the Right-wing conspiracy angle.

One size fits all.
