Haunted by Abortion

Some regrets are fleeting. Some are carried for a lifetime.

Actress Ellen Burstyn had an abortion when she was 18. She's now 74.

Her choice still haunts her.

In an interview on CFRB Radio, Burstyn talks about her pain.

From After Abortion, via Kathryn Jean Lopez:

[T]he interviewer asked Burstyn 'what was the lowest moment' of her life.

Burstyn: You know, I guess, I hate to talk about this on the air, but having an abortion. You know that was really an extremely painful experience.

Interviewer: Did you feel you didn't have a choice?

Burstyn: At the time I was just young and dumb, I didn't really want to have a baby then. It was the wrong thing to do and I didn't really understand that till later. That was very very painful, that was probably the worst....These experiences are--we make a choice, and they have ramifications for the rest of our life...It's one of the dark threads [in our life's tapestry]. I try not to allow regret to settle over me like a shroud, because I think it's an unhealthy way to live.

Over 50 years after choosing to have an abortion, Burstyn cites that time as the lowest moment of her life.

Anonymous said...: Ms.Burstyn is displaying what used to be called "a conscience". Abortion is used commonly as a method of birth control with fatal consequences for the "inconvenient truth" of a childs existance.
Most pro-abortionists fight tooth and nail in an effort to color abortion as inoccuous and frivolous. To even consider that a baby is killed will not be tolerated. So the little thing with head, shoulders, knees and toes, is non-baby-person.
If you killed a non-baby-person, there is no shame or guilt.
But there is a dead non-baby with eyes and ears and mouth and nose.
