With his sit-in protest entering in its sixth day, Tom Nelson may soon be breathing freely again.
He may feel sunshine on his face and sleep in a bed.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- After a sit-in of 5 days to protest the failure to pass a state budget, state Representative Tom Nelson didn't want to answer when asked if tonight will be his last sleep-over in the Assembly chamber. He replied "Don't jinx me."
He's spent five nights pumping up a leaky air mattress for his Capitol camp-out.
The Kaukauna Democrat and former technical college teacher began his sit-in last Thursday. Then on Friday evening, Governor Jim Doyle and legislative leaders announced reaching a compromise on the 2-year budget that was supposed to take effect July first.
The Senate and Assembly are expected to approve it tomorrow, then send it to Doyle for signing.
Nelson's sit-in drew widespread media coverage, but he says he doesn't know if it had any impact on breaking the budget stalemate.
Nelson says he doesn't know if his protest had any impact on breaking the budget stalement?
He's got to be kidding!
That is positively ridiculous!!!
That's right. Nelson sleeping on a leaky air mattress was what did it. It was his sit-in that pushed through the deal.
I think the guy does need to get some fresh air quickly. Staying in the Assembly chamber seems to have affected his mental functioning.
