This is weird.
Whitnall School District Superintendent Karen Petric wanted to retire early because she feared for her safety.
She's had a change of heart.
After parents and taxpayers angrily spoke out over her $230,000 severance package, it seems Petric determined she could suck it up and deal with concerns for her personal safety.
From 620 WTMJ:
The Whitnall School District Superintendent stated she wants to keep her job after a board meeting that was called to discuss her request for an early retirement and a $230,000 severance package.
Originally Petric stated that she wanted to retire due to safety concerns. Some reports say it comes from an argument with a former Whitnall administrator.
"I'm outraged that this board could even consider granting such an outlandish retirement package," said Whitnall parent Suzanne Schwartz about the requested severance.
"This proposal does not benefit anyone in our district. It benefits one person only."
Greenfield police say no credible threat exists against any students or staff at Whitnall.
The board went into closed session and came out with no conclusion; it was then that Petric decided to stay on the job.
Fair or not, this looks like a case of Petric hoping to take the money and run. When she was met with objections, she backed down.
So now Petric says she wants to keep her job.
I don't think she should. She's shown that her judgment is questionable, not to mention her character.

If you only knew the half of what goes on in that district. The focus by upper administration has not been on children for a long time. The elementary schools are good but limited as to what can be provided because the administration never steps foot in the place. Don't have to solve a problem if I don't put a face to it. The board is very weak, they think because these butt kissers jump for them that makes them good at their jobs. They have abandoned the teachers to deal with some huge issues like violent kids, parental neglect, significant learning issues, but their solution is to use a canned reading program and treat all kids the same. The administration is basically absent and uninvolved. Too bad because the talent in the schools is amazing and has carried their sorry butts for years now. They've insulted the teaching staff by treating them like drones, no input, no involvement, just shut up and do it. The schools are empty at 3:45 because no one wants to put in one minute more than they need to, it gets them nothing but trouble. Whitnall is a district in crisis and the board has their heads in the sand. A ship without a rudder will never get to where you want it to.
The Petric severance package controversy was positive in that it got a good deal of media attention and put the Whitnall district under the microscope.
It was good to see parents of school kids and taxpayers without kids in school showing up to voice their dissatisfaction.
I think it's a step in the right direction as far as firing people up to demand that all the issues you raised be addressed.
It seems the complacency of the past is over.
Why aren’t people outraged?
One parent pointed out that if any business had an employee acting the way the Super did, with such bizarre behavior, negligent memos, and scaring the heck out of fellow employees with false stories about their safety, the company would be only to too glad to accept a resignation.
But the Board (with one fine exception) gave the Super a series of nauseating accolades.
With three members either leaving or up for re-election anyone think they wanted to avoid being named in lawsuits in the future by the Super by kissing up?
Hey folks... 4 principals in 5 years at the Middle School?
Why? Where’s leadership?
And what really did happen with the un-named former administrator who is a supposed threat? Threat how?
What did that person really do? And how did they do it without the Super’s knowledge?
Is the Super afraid not of physical violence, but of being implicated in financial irregularities and wants to get out and far away right now?
Inquiring minds want to know.
There are so many unanswered questions.
Taxpayers should hold school officials and the board accountable. They deserve answers.
The nonsense continues. The district has paid thousands to ex employees for unlawful termination, thousands to the person Petric said was threatening her, Petric, Vogel and Habanek have harassed teachers to the point of law suits. Petric is one sick individual who shouldn't be in charge of anyone at any time. She has a severe personality disorder that makes her distort the truth in her own head to fit her unstable personality. The school board knows she is trouble but isn't willing to fight to get rid of her. They are a house divided and can't agree on anything. The district is a black hole of money with no one at the upper administration earning the 6 figures they collect. They would have been better off paying her to just leave and trying to regroup and move on. Now the nonsense and carnage has continued for several more years and will continue until she either retires or gets fired. She has cost the district millions in poor decisions.
Hmmm, weird that somebody would post a comment on 3/12/09 to a 12/18/07 story that for all practical purposes is a dead issue. And also name a bunch of other employees. Are you a union negotiator, now wishing you'd taken last year's original offer? Are you a current disgruntled/former employee? Or are you ticked after being in a closed session 2/23 that relates now to a mysterious item on the agenda for 4/6? If it's the later, with the $$ the board recently walked away from by getting rid of all school fees, if you had to negotiate something- I hope it costs you plenty-like your seat, before you build something the community has said they don't financially support. By the way, for the 1st anonymous- I have no idea which school you claim is empty at 3:45. Most real teachers are still there long after that. Unless they're the "union" work no longer than your contract bunch. Art, PE and Guidance-never papers to correct & use the same lesson plans for 20 yrs! OOh be ready. They're all coming to the board mtg. Mon.4/6- with their cool Tshirts on-ready to battle the board. I'll be home laughin'. Ya'll deserve each other!
Why would someone post 3/12/09 about a 2yr. old dead issue? Are you a union person who regrets not taking the last contract offer? Some other disgruntled employee or board member? You went to closed session 2/23 & appear to never have convened regarding that item in open session. Does a mysterious 4/6 agenda item relate to your 2 yr. venting in this post? Will the community who just saw the board end school fees, react positively to what's coming down the pike when they compare the results of the community & employee survey responses to the board's actions? What about the Field House pipe dream? Will they swallow all of the latest board action & re-elect those who are truly responsible for the majority of the staff's feelings of lack of worth? Anonymous: What building has no teachers in @ 3:45? Not mine. Unless you're one of the Union "work only your contract" group. Art, PE, Guidance they don't grade papers. They've taught the same lessons for the last 20 yrs. Hey Board members- be ready, the UNION is wearing their matching shirts Mon. 4/6 & marching in to the meeting together to show their SOLIDARITY and put you on the spot. The secret notes were put in mailboxes Fri. They want to embarrass the administration & the board. With exception of 2-3 board members, ya'll deserve each other, both Union & hot dog Board members.
