What's a Snow Day?

I must be operating under a false impression.

I thought the reason schools closed when there's heavy snowfall is because traveling is dangerous.

Children aren't safely able to make it to school and back.

Right? Isn't that the point of the cancellations?

I believe it is, or was.

On its website,
TMJ4 has some helpful information on ways to ride the storm out, "Where To Go For Snow Day Fun For Kids."

A winter storm is expected to enter the Milwaukee area Tuesday night and continue through Wednesday afternoon. A total of 10 to 14 inches of snow could fall in the area.

Below is a list of places you can take your kids that PLAN to be open Wednesday. Some of these places could close depending on road conditions, so it is best to call before making the trip.

Local movie theaters aren’t adding shows, but there are some early afternoon shows.

Marcus Theaters has showings of Alvin and the Chipmunks and The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything. Check your local theater, but most shows start between 1 and 2:30 p.m.

Click on the link under related content for Marcus Theaters show times.

AMC Mayfair also showing Alvin and the Chipmunks and National Treasure 2. Check with the theater for times, most start between 1-2:30 p.m.

Budget South Theater is showing the Bee Movie at 12:15 p.m.

Oak Creek Value Cinema has some family friendly showings, but nothing before 4:00 p.m.

This is nuts!

IF CHILDREN CAN GET TO THESE PLACES SAFELY, SURELY THEY CAN GET TO SCHOOL.

This is priceless:
Some of these places could close depending on road conditions, so it is best to call before making the trip.

UNBELIEVABLE. It's crazy.

And this:

ADDING SHOWS???

Will someone tell me what is the point of a snow day?

This is irresponsible. One shouldn't have to point out that it will be DANGEROUS to go out in weather like they're predicting. But also, you could potentially hinder snow plowing efforts as well as hinder other emergency vehicles trying to help those who were stupid enough to follow tmj4's advice.

Jimi, this is so crazy!

It really ticks me off. It's completely counter to the purpose of closing schools because of bad weather.

NUTS! ABSOLUTELY NUTS!!!

As someone that drove a school bus for 5 years, I can tell you that a foot of snow isn't going to stop a 12 ton school bus. Ice can be a problem, but I never had a problem with snow, and I did a lot of charter trips with ski clubs, so I was out at night and weekends in some nasty storm, and never once did I have trouble with snow.

It's all a matter of liability. People would be all too happy to sue the local school district in the case of an accident. Make it a serious one, and it will be a total hit on the taxpayers.

So, you want your taxes to go up?

You speak from real experience, Patrick.

Maybe the school buses can be used to drop the kids off at Chuck E. Cheese or a movie or one of the other places that TMJ4 suggests.

Good grief.

I agree, Capper, that liability and lawsuits, putting children at risk, are all part of it. If the roads are so dangerous, children shouldn't be on the road. That's the point.

It's weird for TMJ4 to promote activities to drive kids to when classes are cancelled for their safety.

I'm not saying there shouldn't be a snow day. I'm saying kids shouldn't be going on a trip to the zoo when the roads are bad.

I work at one of the movie theatres - I can tell you that we are not properly staffed to handle a couple hundred extra customers on a day like today. 90% of our staff consists of students. We have sent out emails asking if they would like to work on their snow day - but I doubt that any will say yes...

If anybody does decide to go catch a flick today - be prepared for long lines and long waits.

Of course you wouldn't have scheduled to have staff available for what amounts to a surprise holiday.

Conditions are so bad out there today.

This may actually be the first snow day in a long time that's really a stay at home snow day.
