Ryan Kropp Sentenced to Six Months, Probation

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

A cook who planted hair in a steak he prepared at a West Bend restaurant was sentenced Tuesday to at least six months in jail and could spend another year or more behind bars if he doesn't take measures to address a history of substance abuse and mental health issues that have included five suicide attempts.

Washington County Circuit Judge James K. Muehlbauer imposed and stayed a sentence for Ryan Kropp of one year in prison and two years of extended supervision, meaning that’s the amount of time in prison he could spend if he doesn’t successfully complete three years of probation.

Conditions of Kropp’s probation include six months in the Washington County Jail; maintaining absolute sobriety; undergoing counseling for anger, drugs and alcohol abuse; getting treatment for a bipolar condition; maintaining full-time employment; and achieving high school equivalency.

...In court Tuesday, Muehlbauer cited a pre-sentence investigation that says Kropp used to smoke marijuana daily and often drank until he passed out.

It also says that Kropp had tried to hang himself in jail and on four occasions tried to commit suicide by taking prescription drugs.

Kropp’s attorney, Jonathan LaVoy, said Kropp has “significant emotional, developmental and mental health issues.”

Kropp called the crime “disgusting and uncalled for.”

Referring to Hansen and his wife, Kropp said, “I hope someday they can forgive me for being such an idiot.”

At least Kropp is showing some remorse, though I don't think Hansen and his wife will be ready to forgive him for a while, at least not until they settle their lawsuit with Texas Roadhouse.

I have to wonder how someone as screwed up as Kropp managed to hold his job.

Moreover, I wonder why Texas Roadhouse hired him in the first place.

Surely, Kropp's co-workers and the restaurant's manager must have been aware that Kropp was a complete mess.

If Kropp really does have "significant emotional, developmental and mental health issues," there must have been some signs that he was unstable.

Bottom line: Kropp shouldn't have been in a position to prepare food for public consumption.
