The Brewers did it. They did it the hard way, but they did it.
How sweet it is!
From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
The ball flew off Ryan Braun’s bat and kept rising.
Out near a scoreboard that showed the Mets going down in New York. Out over the left field wall, taking a wild bounce and dropping into the Brewers bullpen, where men carried on like little kids, grabbing for the ball, grabbing for a piece of a dream.
And there was Braun, dancing around the bases, the crowd roaring, players jumping, Braun’s two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning looking a little like a fairy tale come true in the 162nd and final game of the regular season.
“It felt kind of like it was scripted,” Braun would say later, drenched in sweat and champagne, standing on the field.
This wasn’t a script. It was the Brewers making their own brand of baseball history.
Behind Braun’s dramatic home run and pitcher CC Sabathia’s marvelous complete-game triumph, the Brewers defeated the Chicago Cubs, 3-1, earned a wild-card berth and advanced to the National League Divisional Series.
On Wednesday, the Brewers will play the Philadelphia Phillies in the opening game of the best-of-five playoff. It will mark the Brewers’ first playoff appearance since the World Series in 1982.
...It was a long time waiting for the Brewers to get back to the playoffs, years of dashed hopes, some lousy seasons, glimmers of hope in recent years and then these final frantic and dramatic weeks.
And there was a terrific last game. Sabathia striking out seven batters, allowing only four hits and one unearned run.
“This is a big moment,” Sabathia said after the game, standing in front of the dugout.
What a fantastic moment for the team and the fans!
When hundreds of thousands of people are happy, sharing the same joy, it's something magical.
I hope this is just the beginning for the Brewers, the start of the magic of October.
