ANOTHER Fight at Bradley Tech

UPDATE, December 8, 2010: Bob Donovan: Bradley Tech Brawl and Cover-Up
________________

Here we go again.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Milwaukee police have a person in custody after a fight at Bradley Tech High School this morning that resulted in an officer getting punched in the face.

Milwaukee police responded to a call this morning about several fights at the school, 700 S. 4th St.

"Apparently one of the officers who responded was punched in the face," Milwaukee police Sgt. Mark Stanmeyer said.

"We have several people in custody" including the person who threw the punch, Stanmeyer said.

From 620 WTMJ:
"Shortly after school started there was a fight that broke out," said Capt. Eduardo Negron. "It carried over until more fights broke out and officers who are assigned to the school intervened."

"While they did so, one of the officers took a punch to the face and that officer is being conveyed out for medical treatment."

Negron was unsure of the exact number of students arrested, saying only that officers have "several people in custody."

From TMJ 4:
Bradley Tech student Yelitza Torres says she does not feel safe at Bradley Tech.

TODAY’S TMJ4’s Melanie Stout: “What else goes on at school? Just fights all the time?”

“Fights, sometimes they bring weapons, like last year they brought a weapon. This school is just bad. That’s the only word for it is bad. It’s a bad school. Kids should not even be coming to this school,” Torres said.

Melanie Stout: “Is it hard to learn here?”

“I’m telling you, my fourth block, we don’t do no learning. The teacher teaches to the people that listen. The other kids jumping on tables, knocking on the windows to see the people downstairs, running to other classes, spraying the fire things. You don’t learn nothing,” Torres said.

Nine students received state disorderly conduct charges.

We’re also told a number of students are being suspended.

Police remain on the scene.

Unbelievable.

What really bugs me is that Bradley Tech is a state-of-the-art facility and better equipped than many suburban and private schools.

The educational opportunities are there for the taking.

The kids do have a chance.

Clearly, the answer isn't pouring more money into MPS and higher property taxes.

Perhaps there needs to be a mandatory but simple program that addresses proper etiquette for students.

Rule 1: Don't assault police officers.

Does that require a tax hike?

I graduated from Bradley Tech, class of 2008. I entered the school when Tech was having there first signs of trouble. I mean just the year before i was accepted to Tech, the children could be trusted to eat lunch off campus. Tech used to have an entrance exam, if you failed it, you did NOT get in. This exam was very difficult that even when my father tried to get in, he failed. I am not sure if Tech does this anymore, and if they do, they probably do not use it for anything or make it that tough. I say, make the exams tough again, take some pride in the what facilities and education you have to offer. Don't just give it away, let the children earn the right to be a student. The Tech i thought i knew when i entered, was a place where you could learn construction, technological, and manufacturing skills that would later lead to an apprenticeship, or further education. This type of teaching taught us how to get along or at least how to work with each other to get the job done. WHAT HAPPENED!!! I say make entrance exams tough and count. Give the right to that facility to the people that earned it. That building is too well equipped with so much state of the art equipment to just let it go to waste. I am embarrassed to hear or read these students exact words to the press, its not even proper English. It makes me sick......i took so much pride in that school, it had so much to offer, yet they let so many kids in that do not want to be there, thus through my 4 years there, instructors, GREAT INSTRUCTORS with so much more to offer than any other high school, left because of disgust, fear, and the children did not want to learn.....you make me sick TECH!!!
I cant tell you how many times i have seen teachers almost killed by other students, just the things i have seen period at that school.
