David Letterman and Joaquin Phoenix

Joaquin Phoenix was David Letterman's guest on The Late Show Wednesday Night.

To say it was a bizarre interview is putting it mildly.

It wasn't that long ago that Phoenix received accolades for his acting. He won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Academy Award for his work in Walk the Line.

Letterman was gracious, heaping praise on him for his performance in his new film, Two Lovers. He also was dishing out plenty of compliments to Phoenix for his acting ability in general, citing past performances.

Of course, Letterman was also reacting to Phoenix's extremely odd behavior during the interview. It was so strange that Letterman couldn't act as if everything was normal. It's in situations like this that Letterman really shines.

At the end of the interview, Letterman said, "Joaquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight."

Phoenix cracked a smile and said, "He's funny. He's funny. He's a funny dude."

Letterman concluded, "We owe an apology to Farrah Fawcett."

That's entertainment!

Watch some highlights.
