Gary Becker: Sex Addict

UPDATE: Becker to be allowed to enter Pennsylvania treatment program

Former mayor Gary Becker will be allowed to leave the state to enter an in-patient treatment program in Pennsylvania.

Becker’s attorney, Patrick Cafferty, made the request. Judge Stephen Simanek granted it Tuesday morning, over objections from the state.

Becker argued that his client should be treated no better and no worse than any other defedant charged with similar crimes, and the judge agreed.

Cafferty said there is a bed immediately available at the KeyStone Center. Once Becker files change of address notification and a signed release from the facility – guaranteeing it will inform the court if Becker violates the conditions of the program or is discharged for any reason – he would be allowed to leave for Pennsylvania.

Racine's former mayor, Gary Becker, claims he is a sick man.

Yes, Becker allegedly engaged in nauseating behavior, online and off, preying on children.

Read the criminal complaint. What he's alleged to have done is sick. There's no question about that.

But is Becker sick? Is his behavior the result of an illness?

If you think so, Becker can be seen as a victim, too. Instead of being a bad man choosing to do bad things, he's suffering. To a certain extent, that relieves him of some responsibility for his actions. It provides an excuse.
Convenient!

He wants to get help to cure him of his affliction.

From the Racine Journal Times:

At a bond modification hearing Tuesday for Gary Becker, his defense attorney will request that the former mayor be allowed to travel to Philadelphia for treatment at an inpatient facility for sexual addictions.

Attorney Patrick Cafferty filed a motion in Racine County Circuit Court on Monday requesting the bond modification.

An attachment to the motion contains a description of the inpatient treatment program called Keystone Center, located in suburban Philadelphia. It says the Keystone Center Extended Care Unit is a residential center for healing for issues surrounding sexual compulsivity and trauma.

The description says the center deals with behaviors such as obsession with pornography, affairs, substance abuse and addiction related to sexual behaviors, internet sex, and other related issues.

I don't see why Becker needs to travel to Philadelphia.

Why can't he receive treatment in Wisconsin while his case is pending? Surely, he could get inpatient treatment here.

Why Philadelphia? Does he know someone there? Perhaps someone he met online?

Bottom line: Becker is charged with crimes against children. He's not a David Duchovny or Michael Douglas type of sex addict.

Becker poses a real danger to society. The charges against him are so serious I don't think he should be allowed to leave the state.
