Vivek Kundra

It seems a week doesn't go by without someone connected to Barack Obama being involved in some sort of scandal or crime.

From the New York Times:

Federal authorities found $70,000 in cash in the home of a city official who was charged Thursday with bid-rigging, taking bribes, money laundering and wire fraud.

The official, Yusuf Acar, 40, is an information systems security officer for the city’s technology office and is paid $127,468 a year. He was arrested at his Washington home and held without bond pending a hearing on Tuesday.

Mr. Acar had worked for Vivek Kundra, the city’s former chief technology officer who was recently named by President Obama to be the federal government’s chief information officer. Mr. Kundra has not been tied to the federal investigation, the authorities said, but was put on leave from his new job on Thursday until details of the investigation became clear.

Also arrested Thursday was Sushil Bansal, president and chief executive of the Advanced Integrated Technologies Corporation, which has contracted with various city government agencies since 2004 to provide information technology services and equipment.

Mr. Bansal was charged with bribery and money laundering, and was released on the condition that he not conduct overseas financial transactions or leave the Washington area. He is due back in court on April 21, and prosecutors said they were hopeful that a plea agreement could be reached in his case.

Mr. Acar is accused of having sought and received bribes from Mr. Bansal and of having awarded contracts to Mr. Bansal’s company.

Kundra wasn't arrested. He's just "on leave from his new job... until details of the investigation became clear."

If it was certain that Kundra's hands were perfectly clean, there would be no reason for him to be put on leave. It appears that there are some questions that still need to be answered.

This may just be a formality but it still looks bad.

The problems with Obama's picks never stop.

Case in point: H. Rodgin Cohen

H. Rodgin Cohen, chairman of the New York law firm Sullivan & Cromwell, has withdrawn his name from consideration for deputy Treasury secretary, becoming the fourth pick for a prominent Treasury Department post to pull out in recent weeks.

A prominent attorney who has advised many of the top Wall Street firms, Cohen dropped out after the White House found an issue during his vetting process, two sources familiar with the matter said. The sources declined to identify the reason. Cohen did not respond to messages seeking comment.

Kundra sent all employees to ethics training 4 times a yr versus the once a yr when he arrived. One of the things they teach in ethics training is NOT to go to the CTO or ANY OTHER POLITICAL APPOINTEE in a whistleblower case and to go to the FBI or IG directly.

This Acar guy had been skimming the district years before Kundra got there. Kudos to Kundra for creating an environment where people feel comfortable reporting this kind of scam. He is all about transparency and it be no surprise to anyone he has no part of the investigation

You make Kundra out to be Mr. Clean.

Why is Kundra on leave?

March 16, 2009 (Computerworld) Just one week after being named the federal government's first-ever CIO, Vivek Kundra took a leave from that job last Thursday, following the bribery-related arrests of a former subordinate in the District of Columbia's IT department and the CEO of an outsourcing contractor.

The FBI arrested the two men and raided the district government's IT offices, which Kundra oversaw as chief technology officer until President Obama named him federal CIO on March 5.

There was nothing in the court documents released at the arraignment of the arrested men to indicate that Kundra had any knowledge of their alleged illegal activities. However, the White House confirmed that Kundra is taking a leave of absence; an administration official who asked not to be named wouldn't discuss the reasons for the leave or say how long it might last.

Again, why is Kundra on leave?
