Milwaukee Ald. Ashanti Hamilton was booked into the Milwaukee County Jail and released Tuesday night, on suspicion of physical abuse of a child.
Journal Sentinel columnist Daniel Bice last week reported that Hamilton, 35, had been accused of beating his 6-year-old daughter the previous weekend.
Hamilton's attorney, Michael Chernin, said no decision has been made on what charges, if any, will be filed.
"This is a routine part of the process when someone is accused of a crime," Chernin said. "We're just trying to work through this."
He said that Hamilton had turned himself in voluntarily at the jail.
"He's not under arrest," Chernin said.
Hamilton has been accused of abusing his daughter, but he hasn't been charged.
