Carrie Prejean: Miss California and Gay Marriage

UPDATE, May 12, 2009: Carrie Prejean, Donald Trump, and Free Speech
_______________

Carrie Prejean, Miss California, was asked a very political question during the Miss USA competition.

Here's the video.

From FOX News:

When asked by judge Perez Hilton, an openly gay gossip blogger, whether she believed in gay marriage, Miss California, Carrie Prejean, said "We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised."

Keith Lewis, who runs the Miss California competition, tells FOXNews.com that he was "saddened" by Prejean's statement.

"As co-director of the Miss California USA, I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss California believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman," said Lewis in a statement. "I believe all religions should be able to ordain what unions they see fit. I do not believe our government should be able to discriminate against anyone and religious beliefs have no politics in the Miss California family."

Co-director Shanna Moakler told FOXNews.com that she fully supported Lewis' statement.

...Miss California's answer sparked a shouting match in the lobby after the show. "It's ugly," said Scott Ihrig, a gay man, who attended the pageant with his partner. "I think it's ridiculous that she got first runner-up. That is not the value of 95 percent of the people in this audience. Look around this audience and tell me how many gay men there are."

What the hell is this?

It's a beauty pageant. I don't know why Perez Hilton would ask such a question. Why are judges asking contestants about controversial political issues?

The women aren't running for office.

I do know why Perez Hilton asked the question. He has an agenda. It was a win-win situation for him. Either Prejean would support his view or she would not. Either way it would promote his cause and get attention.

Perez Hilton is enjoying the controversy. Read his blog.

Apparently, the Miss USA contest has a LITMUS TEST on gay marriage and Prejean failed. Future contestants beware!

If Prejean had said she was for gay marriage, there would have been no shouting match after the show, no controversy. All would have been right with the pageant world.

Prejean's answer may have prevented her from being crowned Miss USA.

She failed the Miss USA political litmus test.

So...No crown for you!

Here's an interesting twist to this story.

In an interview with Billy Bush for The Billy Bush Show and Access Hollywood, Prejean revealed that her sister is a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and is a gay rights activist.

In the same interview, Prejean would not confirm or deny if there's truth to the rumors that she's dating Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps.

Her opinions on same-sex marriage may have cost Miss California the Miss USA crown on Sunday night – but in an interview with Billy Bush for “The Billy Bush Show” and Access Hollywood on Monday morning, Carrie Prejean revealed that her sister is a gay rights activist.

“My sister is a second lieutenant in the Air Force and she is a gay rights activist,” Carrie told Billy.

Her sister, she added, is not gay.

“No. She supports gay people, she supports gay marriage. My beliefs have nothing to do with my sister or my mom, or whatever.”

Nor was her sister offended by her comments on Sunday night.

“She was just in my hotel room and she said, ‘Sis, I’m not offended by anything that you said. We have two different opinions and I love you because of it. I love you because you stood up for what was right, and it’s not a matter of being gay or not gay, it’s a matter of you competing for Miss USA and getting a question and answering it to the best of your ability.”

...As for Carrie’s own love life, she wants to keep it private.

“He is a great man,” she said on rumors of dating Michael Phelps, laughing in response to Billy’s questions. “Wouldn’t you like to know, Billy Bush? We can talk about that a different day.”

Go Carrie. I am so proud that you didn't blink when it comes to your values and personal beliefs. Too many have stood too silent for too long. We need to bring moral values back to our great country. Winning or loosing a pagent based on a question (which should have NEVER been asked of any candidated) is bogus. If this topic is so important to MR(?) Hilton, then let him spend his own money and start the Gay MISS/MS/MRS/HE/SHE/? USA competition.

Carrie, I admire your courage and conviction. When faced with a difficult situation, you held true to yourself. You are a true WINNER!

Personally, I don't think Mr. Hilton is qualified to be a judge in the event because he obviously is unable to provide an objective evaluation of the contestants.

The Miss USA pagent should apologize for their mistake in asking him to judge and for his incredibly rude behavior to you and other Americans who share the same beliefs.

Carrie--you are fantastic! I am so thrilled to see someone stand up for their beliefs and not be scared to say somthing that is not politically correct in our culture today. What you said will make young girls feel confident in really standing up for what they truly believe and not being scared into agreeing with a lifestyle they do not agree with, just so they won't be criticized. I wish people could allow each other to have their opinions. We live in America right? We want free speech right? Everyone does not have to have the same opinion and belief about everything right? We should celebrate that we can all feel, think and speak about topics that we don't agree on, but agree to disagree!! You are awesome Carrie!

Carrie, I have never been led to post on a blog, until now. Your moral strengths and values are to be commended. As a mother of 2 young girls you are a fine example of a role model. You stood for the values our country was founded on and has strayed from, we need to get back to standing up for what is moral. Great job, you are a true winner!!!

Carrie- I saw your interview on msnbc today. I was SO proud of you for standing you ground and what you believe! Carrie, who you are actually battling! Its not Mr. Hilton its the evil one! Also, remember what Jesus said in John 15:18- "If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.

Go Carrie!!! Thank God there are a few people in the public arena who call right right, and wrong wrong. You are awesome!!!!

There you have it folks. Miss USA will always be chosen on political and religious viewpoints. Forget the talent and beauty portion of the show. I applaud Carrie Prejean for standing firm to her opinion no matter what the cost. It is no longer popular being a Christian in America. This country has largely lost its moral compass. To Carrie Prejean, I say thank you and God bless you. I found your courage inspirational. America needs more people like you.

I have never "blogged" before. But this is worth speaking my mind. I'm so proud of you for standing up to your beleifs. So much of Gay rights is being pushed on Americans and our familes. People forget that this great country of ours was founded and the constitution was based on Christian beleifs. Honestly, I have NEVER heard of this so called "celebrity" Hilton until all of this came up. He put you on the spot, probably knowing your background and beliefs, hoping it would stir up something. I live in North Carolina, and I wish you had won! Stay strong! Best wishes from North Carolina.

WOW - wish I had met a woman with the beauty and strength of character of Miss Beautiful (Carrie Prejean) back in the day!! Since when do the opinions of an OBNOXIOUS handful of vocal gays have to be heard - - while no opposing views are TOLERATED - - !! What an interesting twist on prejudice. Whoda thunk it?

Carrie, You are a true inspiration to all of us. You stood up for your beliefs no matter the out come. As for this Hilton gentleman, When you ask someone what they think, that is an opinion, everyone is entitled to that, I feel sorry for you that you have to go nae calling because she does not have the same beliefs as you. Also I did not hear any "booing" as Mr. Hilton said I only heard clapping.
Congrats to Carrie for standing up for her values!!!

YOU GO GIRL! I personally don't have a problem with Gay Marriage, however, I don't like a self centered buffoon like Perez Hilton trying to ruin someones'reputation to advance his cause. I really, really appreciate Carrie's honesty as should all Americans and Canadians.....

Hilton perfectly illustrates the Radical Left. Isn't it ironic that someone like Hilton who so stridently demands tolerance, has none himself for those who do not agree with him?...

Kudos to Miss Preejan, maybe Hilton should ask her to share some of her conviction, poise & grace...

Perez Hilton is a piece of crap!! Good for Carrie for standing by her beliefs!! And since when are people treated like criminals and publicly vilified for having opinions outside the current mainstream.
While I'm at it, how does the government legislate marriage? Are we still separating Church and State??
I happened to not favor gay marriage as a religious matter. But I do believe gay couples should be recognized by the government with a civil union status and afforded requisite benefits.

"And since when are people treated like criminals and publicly vilified for having opinions outside the current mainstream."

Actually, when the people have the opportunity to vote on same-sex marriage, the majority vote against it.Check out this Quinnipiac poll to find out more on public opinion.

You wouldn't know it because of the lib media and Hollywood and very vocal activists, but the public still opposes same-sex marriage.

That's the mainstream.

And of course, during the campaign, Obama and Biden were clear about opposing gay marriage.

Opinions are fine. I am of the opinion that rewarding 1 group for their intent to commit their life to another forever but preventing another group w/ the same intent & desire is discriminatory & hurtful; the HUMANITY of the 1st group seems to have more value than that of the 2nd. The morning of Nov 5, 2008 broke 36,000 hearts. Opinions & ideology are fine, but are we really willing to sacrifice people's lives for opinion & ideology? 36,000...
