Mayor Tom Barrett Fills Potholes

I don't think of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett as a hands-on sort of guy.

He's not very high profile. He doesn't make a lot of news. He's just sort of there, usually out of the spotlight.

Today, Barrett emerges. He's scheduled to really accomplish something for the city that will offer immediate results in improving the quality of life of its citizens.

Barrett will be filling potholes. I presume that means he'll be grabbing a shovel and laboring.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Mayor Tom Barrett will join Department of Public Works crews in helping to fill potholes this morning. City workers say requests for pothole fixes are down 38% this year compared to last.

Why is he doing this?

To draw attention to the fact that Department of Public Works crews are actually repairing the streets?

Has City Hall received a lot of complaints on potholes? They're down 38 percent from last year.

Is this a way for Barrett to show that he not only feels Milwaukee residents' pain but he's going to personally adminster some pain relief?

I think it's silly. It's a stunt and a rather strange one.

Not sure.

Doesn't he have to be a union member?
