Sister Norma Giannini Released

Sister Norma Giannini has served her jail time and was released today.

From WISN:

A nun who served one year in jail on a sexual assault conviction has been released.

Sister Norma Giannini was let out at 3 a.m. Thursday.

She is now on probation for nine years.

Giannini's victims told authorities they had dozens of sexual encounters with the nun while attending St. Patrick's School in Milwaukee during the 1960s.

...Giannini has admitted to a church panel that she also molested a Chicago boy and at least three other minors.

Giannini will eventually have to register as a sex offender.

Although Giannini has served her sentence, I don't think justice was served.

One year in jail was less than a slap on the wrist considering the crimes she committed.

While she was jailed, her lawyer worked for her early release, citing that her incarceration was killing her, literally.

Nikola Kostich, Giannini's lawyer, said the elderly woman had been taken to emergency rooms once a month, the last time being admitted for five days because of congestive heart failure. He said his client had lost 30 to 35 pounds during her incarceration because of the food at the facility and that he was "trying to save her life." He said the effort to get Giannini out of jail early was prompted by letters from her doctors.

Thankfully, the request for her early release was denied.

And wonder of wonders, she managed to survive.

It was just one year out of her life to pay for her years of sexual abuse of children. And she wasn't even willing to accept that meager sentence in a cooperative manner.

Without a doubt, Giannini has earned the label of "sexual predator."

Although I don't think she poses any threat to the community now, I question why this woman is free.

I don't believe that she paid the appropriate price for her crimes.

The subject of crime and punishment .vs. Justice has no easy resolutions. She was caught, she was convicted, the chances of her molesting another child are reduced to near zero. She is now a true pariah, no community will want this person to live among them. Is that enough?

For the horrid betrayal of trust? The scarring of the innocent?

She's a nun. She hasn't been expelled from her religious order.

She'll have a place to live.
