Where's the Outreach to Catholics, Barack?

The Notre Dame family and Catholics continue to argue about the appropriateness of Barack Obama delivering the commencement address and receiving an honorary degree from Notre Dame.

From the Washington Post, a letter to the Editor:

As a fellow graduate of Notre Dame, I was pleased to read Kenneth L. Woodward's March 30 op-ed column, "Why Notre Dame Should Honor Obama."

One reason I voted for President Obama was his willingness to find middle ground on divisive issues. Clearly, the pro-life movement has made little progress over decades in changing the minds of those who are adamantly pro-choice, and whether abortions have decreased is debatable. If Mr. Obama has considered ways to prevent unplanned pregnancies as well as demand for abortions, isn't that a solution any Catholic would want?

On stem cell research, Mr. Obama is looking at both sides' views, weighing scientists' belief in stem cells' life-saving potential against the fears of Catholics and others that human life will be created solely for destruction.

Anne Lewis, the writer of this letter, doesn't state whether she is Catholic.

What's clear, however, is that she doesn't understand the Church's positions on abortion and EMBRYONIC stem cell research.

Upholding the sanctity of life is a nonnegotiable issue.

Nonetheless, Lewis considers Notre Dame alumni and Catholics upset by Notre Dame's invitation to Obama to be unreasonable. After all, in her mind, Obama is trying to prevent abortions from occurring.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Obama is the most radical anti-life person ever to be elected president of the United States.

Barack Obama is touted as one to build bridges, right?

He's the healer, right?

He finds common ground, right?

Obama has set a new tone. He's a uniter.

When it comes to his anti-life agenda, Obama makes NO compromises. He's not reaching out to pro-life proponents.

So far, Obama hasn't issued a single executive order that reaches out to pro-life Catholics. He's done nothing to address our concerns.

He has issued executive orders that assault human life and the most deeply held beliefs of Catholic Americans.

Obama is not building any bridges with Catholics on pro-life issues. In fact, he has promised the Culture of Death crowd that he will champion their agenda.

A majority of Catholic voters voted for Obama, AGAINST the all-but-explicitly issued instructions from their priests. Only fear of losing tax-exempt status prevented the priests from openly threatening to excommunicate Obama voters.

Obama should not disappoint these Catholic voters--he should stand with them, AGAINST the priests.

That's funny.
