Alec Baldwin and a Filipino Mail-order Bride

Alec Baldwin has put his foot in his mouth again.

He's a lot like Joe Biden in that respect.

During his May 12 appearance on Late Night with David Letterman, Baldwin said that he's so desperate to have a large family that he's ready for a "Filipino mail-order bride."

That comment didn't sit too well in the Philippines.

From USA Today, the Associated Press:

Alec Baldwin's joke about getting a Filipino mail-order bride provoked a sharp response in the Philippines, with one senator saying Monday that the 30 Rock star faces violence if he ever visits.

Baldwin, 51, who is divorced with a teenage daughter, said in a May 12 interview on The Late Show with David Letterman that he would love to have more children.

The Emmy-winning actor quipped that he was "thinking about getting a Filipino mail-order bride at this point ... or a Russian one."

...Philippine Sen. Ramon Revilla said Monday that Baldwin's comment was "insensitive and uncalled for" and an insult to millions of Filipinos.

He called the actor "arrogant" and said he is apparently unaware that the Philippines has a law against mail-order brides.

"Let him try to come here in the Philippines and he'll see mayhem," Revilla said, using a local idiom that implies the speaker will personally administer a beating.

The senator is a former action-movie star who occasionally still appears on Philippine TV.

Clearly, Sen. Revilla is not happy with Baldwin.

Video.

Note that in response to Baldwin's derogatory comment about getting a Filipino mail-order bride, Letterman said, "Get one for me, for later."

Letterman rose to the occasion, didn't he? Very classy.

In addition to Baldwin's insensitive remarks about a Filipino mail-order bride, he managed to say other offensive things during his interview.

When talking about his siblings, Baldwin mentioned his three brothers. Letterman thought he had no sisters. Wrong. Baldwin said he has two sisters and added, "They were more galley slaves on the ship than members of the crew."

"Galley slaves"? Very nice.

When speaking of his brother, Stephen, Baldwin trashes Evangelicals.

Transcript

ALEC BALDWIN: My brother, Stephen is, of course, still on his Evangelical crusade. He's an Evangelical minister....

He had his birthday the other day and we went to a birthday party at his house. And when you go, you know, into his world, and you're there with all of his friends and all of his colleagues, it's a little rough for me personally, I must say.

They all are very polite but as the evening wears on and we get toward the dessert course, they start really, you know, bashing away.

Letterman asks if Baldwin is from an Evangelical Christian background.

When he laughs and says "No, no, no, no, no," Letterman asks, "How did that happen, I wonder?"

Letterman makes it sound like Stephen Baldwin joined a cult, choosing to go to the dark side.
BALDWIN: I think he, uh, um,... I think he, uh... it was a script for him to read from at the time. You know what I mean? Like he really, I mean, not the religious part of it, but the political part of it.

In effect, Baldwin says his brother was brainwashed, like other Evangelicals. That's arrogant and condescending.

In a little over two minutes, Baldwin pissed off millions in the Philippines, referred to his sisters as "galley slaves," ticking off countless women, and slammed his brother, Stephen, along with all Evangelicals.

When Alec Baldwin doesn't have a script to read from, he gets in trouble. He's a lot like Obama in that respect.

Much ado about nothing. "Jokes" involving any race, religion, ethnic background etc. Are fodder for the PC attack dogs.

Nothing new here, Baldwin is a typical pompous, intolerant Liberal, like he always has been.

Letterman is the ass he always has been.

It's called "two dudes acting like men." No biggie. On the other hand, as an Obama supporter, I do think it's more worthwhile to concentrate on what he hasn't done right.

Wow, can you say "I'm an Obama supporter" with a straight face still?

Then again, some people do "settle"

Like many of his far-left Hollywood pals, Baldwin feels the need to embarrass this country on occassion with displays of ignorance. Sure, he has a right to free speech like anyone. But as a public personality it would be nice to see some sensitivity about stereotypes. There are plenty of gold-diggers right here in the US. Why slight Filipinas as sex objects? Once again, the true nature of Baldwin and his ilk is exposed by his arrogant, disdainful remarks. Maybe it shouldn't be taken too personally, tho. He treats his own children with contempt, so it's a good thing if he has no more to suffer the same fate. Too bad he didn't keep his promise to move to France- we'd be better off.
