Oconomowoc and Buses: School's Out for Swine Flu

It's May. Spring, such that it is in Wisconsin, is here.

There's good news for some kids in Oconomowoc. No school for AT LEAST a week!

And why are three schools shut down? Swine flu and school buses.

Authorities in Waukesha are listening to Joe Biden.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Three probable cases of the swine flu in Waukesha County were announced Friday - two in Waukesha and one in Oconomowoc - and the Oconomowoc school district announced the closing of three schools.

Two people in the city of Waukesha - a young adult around 20 years old and elementary school age child - and an 18-year-old Oconomowoc High School student are presumed to have the virus, Peter Schuler, director of the Waukesha County Department of Health and Human Services, said at an 11:30 a.m. news conference at the Waukesha County Courthouse.

Oconomowoc High School and two Oconomowoc middle schools were closed and students were dismissed from class at 11 a.m. Friday after a high school student was diagnosed with a "probable, presumptive case of swine flu."

The schools are slated to be closed for seven days, according to an announcement sent by the Oconomowoc Area School District.

The announcement said that the intermediate schools were being closed through next week as a precaution because intermediate students had co-mingled with high school students.

The district instructed families to minimize students' contact with other students during the schools' closure and to report any flu-like symptoms to their physicians. The middle schools are Nature Hill and Silver Lake schools.

The Journal Sentinel does not mention WHY the intermediate students "co-mingled with high school students."

Peter Schuler, the Waukesha County public health officer, clearly states the reason that three schools are being closed.

Schuler says that one student suspected to have swine flu had contact with students at THREE schools because of the "intermingling of the bus transportation that has to do with those children getting back and forth to those schools."

In short, mass transit is risky. It's bad for your health.

Echoes of Joe Biden...
