Joevone Jordan Charged in Roland Haefner's Murder

Joevone Martell Jordan is 21-years-old. Yesterday, he was charged in the murder of Roland Haefner.

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

The candy on Joevone Martell Jordan's bed made his mother wonder whether he might have been involved in last week's robbery and murder of a store owner on Milwaukee's northwest side.

Police say her suspicions proved correct and on Monday credited his family and friends with bringing Jordan, 21, into custody over the weekend in connection with last week's fatal shooting of Roland Haefner, 77.

Jordan is now charged with first-degree intentional homicide and attempted robbery, armed use of force, in the June 17 shooting inside Silver Spring Variety Store, 8305 W. Silver Spring Drive, which Haefner ran for 10 years. If convicted, Jordan faces life in prison. He is being held at the Milwaukee County Jail on $500,000 cash bail.

...A day [after Haefner's murder], a Milwaukee police detective received information from Jordan's family identifying him as a possible suspect. A cousin told police that Jordan's mother contacted him after finding candy on her son's bed. That cousin later asked Jordan, who was outside the cousin's home, if he had anything to do with the crime.

"Yes, I did," the cousin said Jordan told him. The cousin told Jordan he should surrender to police, according to the complaint. Family members called police.

Police later searched Jordan's home with his mother's permission and located a sawed-off 12-gauge shotgun inside his bedroom as well as a camouflage jacket such as one described by witnesses. On Saturday, a woman called police to say Jordan was in her home, and she wanted him arrested. He had told her: "The old man in the candy store kept reaching at his shotgun like he was going to grab the gun," the complaint states. He also told her that he told Haefner that if he reached again for the gun, he was going to shoot him, according to the complaint.

When Jordan chose to kill Haefner, he chose to throw his life away.

Totally senseless. A total waste.

I cannot comprehend how Jordan could murder a 77-year-old man. How could he pull the trigger? How could he be looking the elderly man in the face and talking to him and then kill him?

Even though Jordan showed no regard for Haefner's life, wouldn't you think that the possibility of life in prison would have been a deterrent for Jordan?

I credit Jordan's family members for contacting police. I credit Jordan's mother for cooperating. They did the right thing.

I hope Roland Haefner's family and friends can find some comfort in the fact that Jordan is in custody.
