Daniel Boyd: Plotting "Violent Jihad"

Seven North Carolina men have been training and plotting "violent jihad."

That's a miserable way to spend your free time.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A father, his two sons and four other North Carolina men are accused of military-style training at home and plotting "violent jihad" through a series of terror attacks abroad, federal authorities said Monday.

Officials said the group was led by Daniel Patrick Boyd, a married 39-year-old who lived in an unassuming lakeside home in a rural area south of Raleigh, where he and his family walked their dog and operated a drywall business. But two decades ago, Boyd, who is a U.S. citizen, trained in terrorist camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan and fought against the Soviets for three years before returning to the United States.

An indictment released Monday does not detail any specific terrorist plans or targets overseas, although it claims some of the defendants traveled to Israel in 2007 with the intent of waging "violent jihad" and returned home without success.

"These charges hammer home the point that terrorists and their supporters are not confined to the remote regions of some far away land but can grow and fester right here at home," U.S. Attorney George E.B. Holding said. He would not give details of the alleged plots beyond what was in a news release and indictment.

The seven men made their first court appearances in Raleigh on Monday, charged with providing material support to terrorism. If convicted, they could face life in prison. Court documents charged that Boyd, also known as 'Saifullah,' encouraged others to engage in jihad.

...In 1991, Boyd and his brother were convicted of bank robbery in Pakistan—accused of carrying identification showing they belonged to the radical Afghan guerrilla group, Hezb-e-Islami, or Party of Islam. Each was sentenced to have a foot and a hand cut off for the robbery, but the decision was later overturned.

Their wives told The Associated Press in an interview at the time that the couples had U.S. roots but the United States was a country of "kafirs"—Arabic for heathens.

...Two of the suspects are Boyd's sons: Zakariya Boyd, 20 and Dylan Boyd, 22. The others are Anes Subasic, 33; Mohammad Omar Aly Hassan, 22; and Ziyad Yaghi, 21. Hysen Sherifi, 24, a native of Kosovo and a U.S. legal permanent was also charged in the case. He was the only person arrested who was not a U.S. citizen.

...It's unclear how authorities learned of the activities, although court documents indicate that prosecutors will introduce evidence gathered under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act?

I wonder if warrantless domestic wiretapping was involved in nabbing these 7 wannabe terrorists.

Did these men have their rights violated?

Will the New York Times rip Obama and his administration for permitting this?

No chance.

A year ago, when Bush was in office, you can be sure these 7 would be depicted as victims of what the libs still call the criminal Bush administration.

All that concern is out the window now. Obama is in charge.

Boyd was trained for 3 years in terrorism beginning in 1989. That means he was 19 years old at the time (20 years ago). I wonder if the weapons and training have still not become obsolete. Have we (the US) become so obsessed with "potential terrorism" that we can obtain indictments against just anyone without any obvious supporting evidence of actual, successful wrongdoing. Maybe we should send them to Gitmo where no one is required to even be charged or tried and convicted for any crime before they are incarcerated for "plotting violent jihad".

Who in the heck cares if their rights were violated? They are domestic terrorists! Would you care about their rights when they are shootin' at you or blowing up a mall, which your family had just entered? You wouldn't, you'd want revenge! I don;t care how much of a passifist you are, once that first bullet goes by your head, you don't care about rights..you think about duck and cover! GtBent

Oh, boo hoo, "Looking for truth"... Where does your profound wisdom enable you to determine that the indictments came without obvious supporting evidence? Oh, yes -- I see -- you want evidence of actual wrongdoing. Hey, let's wait until they kill a few dozen people. (Here's an interesting concept -- How about stopping them BEFORE they do it? It's a concept called "intent to commit") Go eat some yogurt and do some yoga or something. Better yet, adopt one of the Gitmo sweethearts, and see how long before they slit your throat.

Ah, the brainwashing is complete for you. There are terrorists coming out of the woodwork. And that, my "friends" is what the war mongers want you to believe. So, please continue wearing your blinders and please, please do not bother to attempt to think for yourselves. It would probably be much too painful. By the way, have you ever considered driving a bit over the speed limit (even if you didn't)? I guess you should have gotten a ticket due to "intent to commit".

"Looking For Truth" --- Thanks for posting a really stupid response. It reveals how ignorant you are, and saves me the trouble of doing so.. Go sing your song to some of the families of the victims of 911.

I have nothing but simpathy for the victims of 911, but we need to place the blame where it belongs. Does anyone really believe that a handful of technologically challenged middle-eastern men, who, by their own flight instructor's testimony could barely fly a small Cessna prop plane, actuallly hijack and fly a jumbo jet passenger plane? Come on now. I must tell you, though, it does take a modicum of intelligence to select a username more inventive than anonymous.

To Mary: Point well taken - my apologies. Now, to "Looking for truth".... I'm confused. Apparently you don't think the people who flew the planes into the WTC were the "technologically challenged middle east men". So who did it? The airline pilots?? Get serious. Your statement would imply that they did, unless some sinister force was flying the planes from remote control. And if the terrorists weren't flying them, then I suppose the evil pilot of Flight 29 drove that jet into the ground. Absurd. The blame for 911 rests directly on the terrorists, with a real "black eye" given to the US agencies that had all the data and information needed to stop it, but overlooked it. I blame them for being asleep at the switch, but they didn't fly those planes. If you extend your logic to other crimes committed, then the person who grew up with poor parenting isn't to blame for killing someone, it's his parents. And the politician that accepts a bribe isn't to blame -- it's the person that offered the money. And the person that gets caught speeding isn't responsible -- it's the car manufacturer who made the car that would go faster than the speed limit. I sure hope you don't have kids...
I hold a bachelor's degree in Mech. engineering, and a Masters in organizational development, with a major specialty in behavioral science, and your views could make a good case study for a psychology class...
A final note: I chose "Anonymous" because it was faster, and choosing a username serves no useful purpose...

They should be shot on sight for treason. And their entrails hung out on public display for the others to see. All the government has to do is say the word and we can do some good old fashion ethnic cleansing right here at home what a joy that would be.
We fought to hard for our freedom.

Your remarks are disgusting. I think you're a lib.

You remind me of John Holdren.

I voted for Obama and I am proud of it. I certainly would never want to be associated with conservatives. Especially when I just watched all the orchestrated disrpution in the own Hall meetings. Now that is really disgusting.

Those comments are absolutely disgusting.

I'm not going to be silent about that. I called the person out in a very civil manner.

When I said I think the poster is a lib I meant I thought the individual is pretending to be a conservative, a poser. His/her remarks were so over the top I don't think they're real.

I did not mean to suggest that libs would say such foul things in terms of their ideology.

Certainly, a lib would never want a suspected terrorist shot on sight.

The weird ethnic cleansing stuff reminds me of Holdren's creepy ideas.

I should qualify my previous comment.

Some liberals, like John Holdren and Ezekiel Emanuel, do espouse ideas and theories that are absolutely horrific.

Obama's views on partial birth abortion are horrific.

I don't want to give the impression that I'm giving liberals like them a pass.

Did you guys read the original story about Charles and Daniel Boyd's arrest in People Magazine? It came out in that 1990's issue that highlighted Elizabeth Taylor's wedding to Larry Fortensky.

The article was quite the sob story about how these two brothers were in Pehsawar doing CHARITY work and wrongly accused of bank robbery. They were converted to Islam by their stepfather after being raised by an Episcopalian mother. Their real father was a Marine captain...but the mother claims he left her in desolate poverty. She claims she made soup in her fireplace with leaves from the yard. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I was suspicious when I read the story. We need to provide guidance to the young men of America so they do not fall into these radical anti-American groups.
