Last night, CBS aired a 48 Hours special, "Michael Jackson: Picking Up the Pieces."
It was anchored by Katie Couric.
Toward the end of the hour, Couric made a bizarre, and I think highly inappropriate, connection between Michael Jackson and America on 9/11.
Apparently referring to the dramatically lower sales of Jackson's 2001 album, Invincible, compared to his previous releases, Couric said something to the effect that neither Michael nor America could live up to the "invincible" billing anymore.
An image of the North Tower of the World Trade Center crumbling into a cloud of dust was shown.
It's true that Michael Jackson was not invincible. Sadly, his life would take some bad turns and eventually he did fall apart.
But America not invincible?
Does Couric believe that America was conquered by the terrorists? Did 9/11 mark the defeat of America?
I don't think so. The towers falling didn't symbolize America's destruction.
I think it's wrong to compare the 9/11 attacks in any way to the many attacks on Jackson, his self-destructive spiral and downfall.
Very, very inappropriate.
