Obama, Liberals, and the "Retarded"

Obama better start reading the legislation that his Democrat comrades are creating.

Those compassionate Democrats, the ones who are on board with denying health services to people with dementia, use the term "retarded" in a health insurance reform bill.

From the New York Post:

The proposed health-insurance bill from the House of Representatives refers to mentally disabled people as "retarded" -- a term advocates, relatives and physicians find outdated and offensive.

The bill refers to: "A hospital or a nursing facility or intermediate-care facility for the mentally retarded ..."

This is not surprising.

Liberals are self-proclaimed compassionate people, but in reality, many are insensitive and cruel and clueless.

Some examples:

CHRIS ROCK, March 13, 2007:

After the mandatory "How are you?" stuff, Conan O'Brien asked Rock what he thought of Barack Obama.
ROCK: The big question is... Is America ready for a black president? Well, I say we just had a retarded one. When did being black become a bigger deterrent than being retarded? I mean, I had a hard life, but it's not as hard as I am Sam.

The audience loved it and so did O'Brien.

For me, it was cringe-inducing.

I don't think that's funny.

BILL MAHER, May 20, 2009:

During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Maher gave an example of an Obama joke that didn't go over well on a recent Friday the 13th. Maher said, "There's a black cat in the White House."

Maher explained that his audience found that offensive. He said that people need to get used to that fact that when he makes a joke about Obama, he's not making a joke about all black people.

MAHER: The same way as when I made a joke about Bush it was not a swipe at all retarded people.

(Note: The word "retarded" was silenced when the show aired. Not bleeped, just not heard.)

BARACK OBAMA, March 19, 2009:

The most disgusting example of coldness and callous cruelty came from the god, the perfect one, the savior -- Obama.

When Obama was on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, he "joked" about the way he bowls.

Transcript

MR. LENO: Now, are they going to put a basketball –- I imagine the bowling alley has been just burned and closed down.

MR. OBAMA: No, no. I have been practicing all –- (laughter.)

MR. LENO: Really? Really?

MR. OBAMA: I bowled a 129. (Laughter and applause.)

MR. LENO: No, that's very good. Yes. That's very good, Mr. President.

MR. OBAMA: It's like -- it was like Special Olympics, or something. (Laughter.)

MR. LENO: No, that's very good.

MR. OBAMA: No, listen, I'm making progress on the bowling, yes.

How could Obama possibly come up with that Special Olympics "joke"?

Obama was attempting to use self-deprecating humor, but in the process, he insulted the accomplishments of the participants in the Special Olympics.

It was a horrible, disparaging remark.

There's absolutely no other way to interpret it. It was a callous, insensitive thing for the president of the United States to say.

As part of his supposed sincere apology, Obama promised to invite Special Olympics athletes over to the White House to play basketball or bowl. That, of course, hasn't happened yet -- over four months later. Another broken promise from Obama.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that the Democrats would use the term "retarded" in their bill.

Bottom line: Obama, the Democrats, and other liberals are not who they claim to be.

The term "metal retardation" is a clinical one, recognized by various medical groups. It is however, falling out of favor, and may someday soon meet the same fate as the once-clinically accepteded terms "idiot," "imbecile," and "moron," and be abondoned.

As such, it is not inaccurate to use the term in such a circumstance, but it is not particularly politically correct.

I personally have substituted "challenged" when referring to the actual condition, and have dropped the term completely when alluding to thoughts or opinions (and yes, people) which lack merit.

I do, however, find it interesting that you choose to single out this instance, while I do not recall you taking to task the many conservative bloggers and commenters who seem so attached to the term "libtard."

I agree with your assessment of what Democrats are all about. They cry and scream about how the poor and underprivileged get screwed by the rich, and then they turn around and screw them worse than ever before. Look at California...the state has been run by Democrats for decades and totally run into the ground.

Congratulations for choosing not to use an offensive term.

I think your attempt to flip my post about the Democrats' use of the term "retarded" into an attack on me is rather desperate.

I am not aware of any elected officials or celebrities using the term "libtard" in legislation or on national TV.

Tell me who they are and I will gladly condemn them. It's an extremely offensive term, in my opinion.

I have never used the word. I believe this is the first time I've typed it.

That said, let me be clear: I am NOT responsible for what conservative bloggers and commenters say. I am responsible for MY words. Period.

If you come across that term, you should take it up with those responsible for using it, not me.

Perhaps if you did, the conservative bloggers and commenters might say, "I could have calibrated those words differently."

Mary, the term mental retardation is in fact a medical term and one that is still used professionally. It is in the process of being replaced by "intellectual disability". It is not necessarily derogatory and for you to say it is used in such a way here is baseless.

As you point out, the term is being phased out. Why?

Because it's offensive.

I guess the Dems didn't get the memo.

It's being phased our because it CAN be offensive. That doesn't mean it always siad in an offensive context. Mary, if professionals and professional groups are still using it, why do you take such offense to the government also using it? Oh I GET it... because you are looking for something to take offense to.

I'm not looking to be offended.

If the term doesn't bother you, what's the problem?

Why are you so bent on demanding that it doesn't bother anyone else?

Why are you making such a big deal out of this if you are so confident that my reaction is inappropriate?

Enough said.
