Tom Barrett T-Shirt

While leaving the Wisconsin State Fair, famous for its cream puffs, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett came to the aid of a woman arguing with a man and yelling for help. Barrett tried to calm the man, Anthony J. Peters.

Peters responded by beating Barrett quite severely.

"Barrett lost teeth in battle with suspect"

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was resting at home Monday after being released from a hospital, and his brother revealed that the mayor suffered extensive injuries as he was beaten when answering a woman's cries for help.

Barrett's brother, John, said the mayor was hit so hard in the face Saturday night that the blow knocked out a bottom tooth at the base and some top teeth.

Barrett's hand was shattered and was repaired in a three-hour surgery. A doctor placed stitches in the mayor's head, and Barrett had plastic surgery to repair another cut that extended from his cheek to his nose.

John Barrett said the assailant threatened to use a gun and then punched the 55-year-old mayor so hard in the abdomen that he buckled.

The man then told Barrett to lie facedown on the ground.

"This is when Tom thinks, 'Yikes, this guy could kill me,' " John Barrett said.

At that point, the mayor came up swinging, and the assailant, Anthony J. Peters, 20, opened up an extendable, police-style baton and started beating him, John Barrett said.

Officials said Sunday that Peters beat Barrett with a pipe.

The mayor was released from Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa about 3:15 p.m. Monday, said Patrick Curley, Barrett's chief of staff.

"He's tired, but the medical staff checked him out and he's in pretty good shape, outside of the fractured hand and the bruises," Curley said. "All the major vital signs checked out. He's going to need a few days to rest and get over being sore.

Barrett's heroic actions are getting a lot of attention across the country and the globe.

Obama called him on Monday.

Obama told Barrett that he went above the call of duty and said he was proud of Barrett's actions, according to a statement from the White House.

Obama also told Barrett that his thoughts and prayers are with the mayor and his family, according to the statement.

Barrett joked with Obama that he wished the call would have been in response to a Brewers pitcher throwing a no-hitter, a reference to a call Obama made to Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle after Buehrle threw a perfect game last month, Patrick Curley, Barrett's chief of staff, said.

It's nice to get a call from the president, but Barrett is receiving a greater honor.
