Either Jay Leno taped his Wednesday show before the news broke that Rush Limbaugh had been dropped from a group led by St. Louis Blues chairman Dave Checketts seeking to buy the St. Louis Rams or Leno knew and didn't want to waste the joke.
In any case, the joke was lame on a number of levels.
JAY LENO: Oh, and did you hear about this? And today, Rush Limbaugh, who was trying to buy the St. Louis Rams, has downplayed racial comments that he's made in the past by saying-- He said, if he was a racist, why would he want to be part of a business that is 70 percent African American?
Well, I don't know, maybe because you would OWN them?
Think that has anything to do with it?
Leno makes it sound as if Limbaugh was trying to be the sole or majority owner of the Rams.
Not so. Limbaugh was approached by Checketts to be part of his group as a minority owner.
Also, Limbaugh denied ever uttering the racial statements he's been accused of making. He wasn't downplaying anything, merely telling the truth and defending himself.
The most offensive part of the joke is the suggestion that Limbaugh wanted to be a slave owner.
Well, if that's the case, then I guess all owners of NFL teams own slaves.
Stupid joke, extremely mean-spirited.
Shame on you, Jay Leno.
