About two weeks ago, Sheboygan Mayor Bob Ryan denied having an alcohol problem. Now he acknowledges that he does.
From WBAY:
Sheboygan Mayor Bob Ryan went before the Common Council Tuesday night to ask for a second chance after allegations call into questions his ability to lead.
Outside Sheboygan City Hall, more than a dozen people held up signs to show where they stood. Some continue to support Mayor Ryan while others back a resolution calling on the mayor to voluntarily step down.
The mayor's character came into question last month when a video taken on a cell phone appeared on YouTube. In the video, the mayor appears drunk and makes an unflattering and sexually-charged comment about his wife's sister.
That same week, the city's former human resources director sent a letter to the city claiming she was fired after rejecting Mayor Ryan's sexual advances -- an allegation he denies.
The Common Council voted on a non-binding resolution asking for the mayor's resignation. More than two-thirds of the council rejected the motion, voting 5-to-11.
The vote came after the council president said he'll offer a motion of censure at the next Common Council meeting. The mayor said he'll accept it.
At the meeting, Mayor Ryan further explained what he called an abuse of alcohol in light of the online video.
"We are making remarkable progress. When my abuse of alcohol interfered, I failed family, I failed myself, I failed you, the Common Council," he said.
The mayor said resigning will never be an option. He denied the claims of sexual harassment.
...The mayor, in conclusion, asked the council to "reunite with me" to move the city forward.
Ryan obviously has the support of the council, at least at this point.
It would be silly for him to resign now.
Why leave if he's not being asked or forced to do so?
