From the Chicago Sun-Times:
Crystal Bowersox may have dominated Tuesday night, but it wasn’t enough to stop the momentum of Lee DeWyze. If anything, his last three performances changed his status from slam-dunk front-runner to underdog.
And voters love an underdog.
Lee won the title of American Idol on Wednesday, going from Mount Prospect paint sales clerk to national pop-culture hero overnight. Viewers must have gotten attached to the guy as they watched him improve from week to week, growing in confidence and polish – even occasionally breaking into a lopsided grin. His humble suburban beginnings and attitude are What the Show Is All About, after all. And he has Simon Cowell’s support – if not a full-fledged bromance with the departing Svengali.
Does Lee deserve it? Heck yeah, and if we’d seen his emotional rendition of “The Boxer” from Arlington Park instead on Tuesday, there would be no question. The more commercial artist certainly won, thanks to “Idol’s” key demographic of frantically texting female tweens.
I agree. Lee deserves it.
He was so emotional waiting to hear the results. I think he forgot how to breathe.
After he learned he won, I thought he might pass out.
It was very sweet. How can you not love a story like a paint store clerk being picked out of obscurity and becoming the winner of American Idol?
Without question, Crystal would have deserved the title, too. She's incredibly talented and poised.
I thought they were both truly deserving. In this case however, female tweens rule the world.

He definitely deserved the big win.
I was really impressed with Lee.
Love them both, and they'll both have great careers. Coming in 2nd (or even lower sometimes) hasn't hindered the careers of the really talented people. Chris Daughtry came in 4th, and is way more successful than a few of the winners.
