American Flags Burned on Memorial Day

From WJW:

Authorities continue to search for suspects in the burning of over twenty-five flags on Memorial Day.

"It's just so sad," says Susan Marlar, co-chair of the Wooster Rotary Club's Flag Committee.

The Rotary Club places over a thousand flags in residents' yards on five different holidays. Homeowners pay a fee which the club uses as a fundraiser.

But, before dawn on Memorial Day, someone torched two groups of flags on two different streets. Police say there is no evidence that an accelerant was used. It appears the flags were just made of a material that burned quickly.

"We're looking at everything from random acts of violence to anything that could be politically motivated," says Lt. Greg Bolek of the Wooster Police Department.

...Residents in Wooster say that are angry and disappointed at the act. "It discourages me," says Kevin Schwarzkopf, a veteran.

Burning American flags that were displayed to honor the fallen on Memorial Day is absolutely sick.

Such complete lack of respect for the sacrifices made by hundreds of thousands of Americans is really horrible.

Were these thugs vandals just out to destroy any property, or were the thugs making a political statement by burning the flags?

Burning over 25 flags is no small deed.
