Another Baby Dead Co-Sleeping

AGAIN?

From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Milwaukee police and investigators from the Milwaukee County medical examiner's office are investigating the possible co-sleeping death of a 6-month-old boy, a police spokeswoman said Thursday.

Police were called to a house in the 3200 block of N. Palmer St. about 8:40 a.m., police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz said.

If it is determined that the boy was co-sleeping when he died, he would be at least the 10th child to die while co-sleeping in Milwaukee County this year, according to a Journal Sentinel count based on information from the medical examiner's office.

The death of this baby boy comes just days after 1-month-old Shaniyla N. Malone died while sleeping in the same bed with her mother and two of her siblings.

There's a level of negligence in infant co-sleeping deaths that shouldn't be dismissed.

The adults should bear some responsibility for the deaths of these little ones. There has to be some accountability. There should be some deterrent in place to protect these innocent victims.

Enough.

It's definitely tragic, and the mom should have provided a safer sleep environment, but it is possible to co-sleep safely. In this case, there were older siblings, fluffy blankets, and pillows in the bed which are all against the rules of safe co-sleeping. This baby was also formula-fed, which means the mom wouldn't have had the same awareness of the baby she would've if she were breastfeeding. It's a little ridiculous to use cases like this to try to make all co-sleeping seem dangerous!

My bad-I was commenting on the death of baby Shanilya. I'll be interested to see how this new case develops. If I were a bettin' woman I'd put down money that this family wasn't practicing safe co-sleeping rules either (check out Dr. Sears' website if you want to see the "rules" I keep mentioning)

A baby is not meant to sleep in an adult bed outfitted with thick comforters, big pillows, etc. Baby Shaniyla was placed on an adult pillow! Very dangerous!

In a number of the co-sleeping deaths in the Milwaukee area, the mother/guardian had been drinking before falling asleep with the infant, making it far less likely for the adult to be responsive.

It's very sad and really intolerable. All steps should be taken to avoid putting the infant at risk.

(By the way, what an adorable baby!)
