Erie Street Plaza: No Bamboo

Here's a SHOCKER, from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

What four years ago was hailed as an inventive, landmark public plaza for Milwaukee is actually starting to take shape - though it looks very little like the original design.

Today, quaking aspen trees are on site and being planted in place of what was to be a bamboo grove at the Erie Street Plaza, a quarter-acre park that overlooks the Milwaukee harbor at the terminus of Erie St. City officials said test plantings of bamboo in the area proved that bamboo wasn't suited to the Midwestern winters.

Really?

The test plantings of bamboo in WISCONSIN showed that it wasn't suited to our winters.

That's too bad.

I envision the streets of Wisconsin neighborhoods lined with towering palm trees.

The failure of the bamboo test plantings probably doesn't bode well for that dream.

Very disappointing.
