UPDATE, July 7, 2010: Ozaukee board passes Arizona apology resolution
_________________
I suppose you could consider the possibility of the Ozaukee County Board issuing an apology to Arizona to be a political stunt and kind of silly.
Then again, the cities, counties, and various boards across the country declaring boycotts of Arizona are engaged in political games. They set this idiocy in motion.
Therefore, I think it's appropriate for the Ozaukee County Board to take action and distance itself from the foolishness. I understand its desire to counter MATC's lame boycott with a statement outlining its opposition to the protest.
From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
Ozaukee County Supervisor Bob Walerstein of Mequon is asking the County Board to apologize to Arizona citizens for the Milwaukee Area Technical College's boycott of that state in protest of an immigration law.
The MATC board's decision in May to boycott the Grand Canyon state was an "intolerant and divisive action," according to a Walerstein-sponsored resolution to be considered at Wednesday's County Board meeting.
The resolution encourages the MATC Board to reconsider its action.
The boycott is "an embarrassment to the county" since MATC serves most of the county and collects taxes from county property owners, Walerstein said.
MATC board members are appointed, not elected, and they should not be declaring economic boycotts on municipalities or states, Walerstein said.
If the MATC board is going to boycott Arizona, I have no problem with the Ozaukee County Board formally opposing that action.
I like RESOLUTION NO. 10-16.
Read the resolution.
It serves to point out how ridiculous these boycotts are. Furthermore, it highlights how misguided Obama's stance on Arizona's immigration law is.
The Obama administration's lawsuit against Arizona is "pathetic" and "weak," according to Mark Levin.
These liberals really don't get it. Of course, some are more confused than others, like Peggy West.
...Proposed wording for a County Board resolution came in an e-mail from state Sen. Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend), Walerstein said. The supervisor asked County Administrator Tom Meaux to draft a resolution.
"I've received calls from constituents in support of this," Walerstein said. "I haven't had anybody say you're full of wee-wee."
Grothman has asked the MATC board to rescind its boycott decision.
"Full of wee-wee"?
I believe Walerstein when he says no constituent has reacted in that manner.
