Hey, Big Spenders!
From CNSNews:
The federal government has accumulated more new debt--$3.22 trillion ($3,220,103,625,307.29)—during the tenure of the 111th Congress than it did during the first 100 Congresses combined, according to official debt figures published by the U.S. Treasury.
That equals $10,429.64 in new debt for each and every one of the 308,745,538 people counted in the United States by the 2010 Census.
The total national debt of $13,858,529,371,601.09 (or $13.859 trillion), as recorded by the U.S. Treasury at the close of business on Dec. 22, now equals $44,886.57 for every man, woman and child in the United States.
In fact, the 111th Congress not only has set the record as the most debt-accumulating Congress in U.S. history, but also has out-stripped its nearest competitor, the 110th, by an astounding $1.262 trillion in new debt.
This is unsustainable.
Way to go, Democrats!
Thanks, Obama!

As if Republicans should also not share culpability? Over $1 trillion spent on 2 wars...
All President Obama's fault, eh? Lots of negative folk forget that overwhelmingly, Republicans voted for many of the programs during the height of the financial meltdown. Got a short memory like Mary does, too? Well perhaps you need to hear Speaker-elect Boehner, in his own words (YouTube clip). Boehner Voted for the TARP Bailout & urging others to support it as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4ja9q386ek
The Democrats controlled Congress the last two years of Bush's Presidency. They could have pulled the plug and didn't. Don't think Democrats aren't getting plenty of return favors from defense contractors. Besides, plenty of Democrats voted to go to war in the first place. And if I remember correctly the war $$$ aren't in this number it's been kept off budget; something else the Democrats could have changed, but didn't (that way they could run up the spending without and it wouldn't look quite so bad).
Oops, I forgot - Republicans=BAD, Democrats=GOOD. How could I have forgotten that fact.
The comment was: "share culpability" not to blame one group or the other. I'm not sure how or why you say what you do, Harvey, but lets remember: you said it (not I). You can believe simplistic thoughts like "GOP=bad", and redefining our language (disingenuous, obtuse, etc.) Most adults prefer not burying our heads in the sand with arbitrary and pointless finger pointing ("Way to go, Democrats! Thanks, Obama!"). It's more meaningful to sticks with the facts. Case in point: the wars were not in the budget (but should have been) but regardless, the cost does appear in the national debt - which was the topic of Mary's posting - debt, not budget. Two separate debates or points to discuss. Besides, as long as you stay focused on Democrats "controlling Congress" since 2006 and consistently ignore the arcane rules like Senate's filibuster, and hold rules which effectively block and obstruct legislation, you'll never quite get it. Yes, both parties are at fault...which is exactly my point above: "share culpability".
