Civil War Ends

Seven score and 6 years ago today, the Civil War ended, with General Robert E. Lee's surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox, Virginia.

I think we need to pause and put in perspective the current political climate in our country.

In spite of all our differences and the polarization, there's no civil war. People, while passionate about their principles, don't have to be uncivil in their discourse. They don't have to slime and smear and lie and fearmonger.

Be honest. Be decent.

Be grateful for the sacrifices made 146 years ago and all the sacrifices made since then in the name of the Republic and liberty.

"We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature."

This isn't just for 'them'... there are a few things you said here that were also for me, though I don't generally name-call, etc.

I didn't realize historically that it was that long since the Civil War ended!
