Jack Kevorkian Dies

Jack Kevorkian is dead.

From the Associated Press:

Assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian died in a Detroit area hospital following a short illness at the age of 83, according to a close friend and prominent attorney.

Kevorkian died at 2:30 a.m. Friday after being hospitalized at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak since last month with pneumonia and kidney problems, his attorney Mayer Morganroth said.

An official cause of death had not been determined, but Morganroth said it likely will be pulmonary thrombosis.

"I had seen him earlier and he was conscious," said Morganroth, who added that the two spoke about Kevorkian's pending release from the hospital and planned start of rehabilitation. "Then I left and he took a turn for the worst and I went back."

So, Kevorkian died of natural causes, assuming his "turn for the worst" was the natural course of his illness.

Is that safe to assume?

Rest in Peace.

Don't recall if you've covered it before. What are you thoughts on doctor-assisted suicide.

I believe it's immoral, and criminal, for a doctor to take steps to KILL a patient.

That's not the same as a patient choosing not to take extraordinary measures to prolong life.

That's the big annoyance to me. As Mary did mention, you can have the plugs pulled through a long-existent document known as an "Advanced Healthcare Directive" or a "Living Will"

That's a problem with a great deal of these arguments, most of them conveniently leave the key fact such as this one out.

I also am disappointed in Jack Kevorkian for deciding to take the law into his own hands, and personally would mention the option of an advanced healthcare directive wherever I go, it is there, and you do have the option of getting put under when you are going to die, rather than have to live through respirators, feeding tubes, and other life-prolonging devices. Sedation is fully legal, but in this culture-war world, people want to fight and look good rather than leave the facts on the table.
