It now IS official. Mark Neumann is in the race for the U.S. Senate.
From the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
Former congressman Mark Neumann said Monday he would run for the U.S. Senate seat held by retiring U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl.
Neumann, who lost a Republican gubernatorial primary to Scott Walker last year, said the time was right for him to run again, work to balance the federal budget and bring jobs back to Wisconsin.
Neumann made his announcement on the Charlie Sykes show on WTMJ-AM (Radio 620).
A Nashotah home builder, Neumann served two terms in Congress, winning elections in 1994 and 1996. He lost a challenge to then-Sen. Russ Feingold in 1998.
Neumann is the first prominent candidate to officially enter the race. Earlier this month, former Gov. Tommy Thompson announced the co-chairmen of his campaign, an indication he planned to run for Senate. Thompson's co-chairmen are Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen and Jim Klauser, a longtime aide and adviser to Thompson.
In his radio appearance, Neumann said he believed his opponent would be U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.). He said he would seek to contrast his conservative record against the record of Baldwin, a liberal.
If Tammy Baldwin is the Democrats' nominee, and Neumann is the Republicans' nominee, Neumann is a lock.
He'll join Sen. Ron Johnson.
How refreshing it would be to have another conservative from Wisconsin in the Senate!
Herb Kohl was smart to retire instead of suffering the humiliation defeat that Russ Feingold did.
Wisconsin is swinging to the Right.
