The small town of Lisbon in Wisconsin dedicated a 9/11 monument yesterday.
It includes a steel beam from the World Trade Center.
Lisbon is nothing like Lower Manhattan. Although in some ways they're different worlds, there are shared, unifying aspects.
Ten years ago, when terrorists hijacked commercial planes, savagely slaughtering thousands of innocents, they didn't just hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The terrorists attacked our country, our home.
The heroes of United Flight 93 fought back. These patriots struggled to save themselves and their countrymen. They died defending our country and saved the lives of innocent men, women, and children.
Americans, whether in the heartland or in New York, watched in horror as the violent, barbaric events played out on live TV. We all mourned the dead, whether due to a deeply personal loss or in sympathy with the grieving members of our American family.
This monument in Lisbon exemplifies the strength and depth of our shared connections, our unity, one nation.
I find that incredibly moving and inspiring.
