After the 54th annual Grammy Awards opened with a performance by Bruce Springsteen, host LL Cool J took the stage.
He began with a prayer for Whitney Houston.
Yes, a prayer. To our "Heavenly Father."
The audience at the Staples Center, filled with self-absorbed, multi-millionaire entertainers, actually bowed their heads in prayer. It was kind of a stunning sight.
At the Grammys, winners frequently give thanks to God during their acceptance speeches. Still, a prayer in public, during this nationally televised event, must have ticked off some of the godless in the viewing audience.
LL made it clear that reciting the prayer before the festivities began was his personal way of dealing with the loss. He wasn't pushing his beliefs on anyone.
He said, "For me, for me, the only thing that feels right is to begin with a prayer."
It was short, but heartfelt.
I wonder if LL will take the sort of heat endured by Tim Tebow for daring to perform a public display of faith. Will he be mocked?
Here's the video:
Amen.
