Ann Romney and Jay Leno (Video)

Ann Romney was Jay Leno's guest on Tuesday's Tonight Show.

She was great, so relaxed and likable.

Leno seemed to struggle to maintain control and not blurt out his typical anti-Mitt Romney crap.

As host, he was relatively gracious, but some of his questions and quips were a bit mean.

For instance, he brought up the 47 percent BS. When discussing the emergency landing Ann Romney's plane made when smoked filled the cockpit, Leno brought up Mitt's comment about opening windows on a plane, mocking him.

Ann responded with grace. She didn't miss a beat. She didn't let Leno throw her off balance. She was definitely in control, so classy.

The interview was not the friendly showcase Leno provides for Michelle Obama when she visits.

In short, it could have been much worse, but it could have been better. I think Ann Romney deserved better treatment from Leno.

I thought his Mormon "joke" was awkward and inappropriate.

Leno asked Ann about the significance of Mitt Romney being the first Mormon president.

She had a wonderful answer: "I love the fact that we have the first African-American president. That means to me that we're leaving prejudices behind. I would hope that if Mitt were elected we would see more of the same, that prejudices are being left behind."

Leno came back with a jerk response: "More of the same - first African-American president. Oh, I'm sorry. Oh, no, I'm sorry..."

Ann was pleasant and laughed. "No, get it right, Jay. Get it right."

Leno said, "Oh, I thought you said you'd like to see more of the first African-American president, just to show that we're really beyond it. That's not what you meant."

Ann, with a big smile, said, "Get it right. We're going to see the first Mormon president."

Leno really is a jerk.

Ann Romney was terrific.
