I understand the various reasons being given by the DNR to discourage homeowners from open burning.
However, at least in southeastern Wisconsin, the message regarding wildfire risk is ill-timed.
From the Associated Press:
State environmental and forestry officials are urging homeowners to refrain from openly burning trash and yard debris. My yard is saturated. It's a waterlogged sponge.
People can obtain burning permits from the Department of Natural Resources, but agency is trying to discourage the practice. DNR forestry specialists say debris burning causes about 30% of Wisconsin wildfires each year.
The threat of a grassfire in my yard is currently zero.
