Indra Nooyi and Lady Doritos

Indra Nooyi seems to be out of touch with consumers of Doritos.

From FOX News:

Indra Nooyi, the CEO of PepsiCo, told WNYC’s Freakonomics last week that Frito-Lay — a subsidiary of the soda giant — would release a “low-crunch” female-friendly version of the tortilla chip because, she claims, women would prefer to eat politely in public.

Men, according to Nooyi, “lick their fingers with great glee” after eating Doritos chips, “and when they reach the bottom of the bag they pour the little broken pieces into their mouth, because they don’t want to lose that taste of the flavor, and the broken chips in the bottom.”

Women “would love to do the same,” the CEO said, but they choose not to because “they don’t like to crunch too loudly in public.”

She continued, “They don’t lick their fingers generously and they don’t like to pour the little broken pieces and the flavor into their mouth.”

Nooyi, when asked if the company is looking to create male and female versions of the chips, said that “it’s not a male and female” thing, but did asked: “Are there snacks for women that can be designed and packaged differently?”
She says it's not a "'not a male and female' thing," but she states that men eat Doritos one way and women eat them another way. Sounds like a "male and female" thing to me.

About the way women eat Doritos, specifically, crunching too loudly in public--

I have never heard of anyone passing on a food because its crunch is too loud. I don't any woman self-conscious about crunching. Maybe no one has confided in me about this terrible shame.

"Low-crunch" chips are soggy chips. No thanks.

Nooyi needs to learn that women do, in fact, "pour the little broken pieces and the flavor into their mouth."

There's a major disconnect with my experience and what's being portrayed in the media.

As a society, certainly in modern America, we've accepted that it's wrong to assault and harass and disrespect women. Harvey Weinstein's actions haven't just become unacceptable. Rape didn't just become a crime. Feminism has been front and center for more than 50 years.

The notion of Lady Doritos is funny.

Women don't like to crunch in public?

I really don't understand why Nooyi would be talking about women being unable to eat Doritos the way they'd like.

I'll eat whatever I want anyway I want.

Turns out, Nooyi didn't know what she was talking about. They're walking back her remarks.

From AdAge:

"The reporting on a specific Doritos product for female consumers is inaccurate," a spokeswoman stated in an emailed Monday evening. "We already have Doritos for women–they're called Doritos, and they're enjoyed by millions of people every day. At the same time, we know needs and preferences continue to evolve and we're always looking for new ways to engage and delight our consumers."
Nooyi is not a very good CEO.

If a male CEO made the comments she made, I suspect he'd be on his way out.
